POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for overseeing and managing the accounting operations of the landscape company, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, particularly focusing on the percentage of completion method for project accounting.
The role includes managing accounting staff, developing and implementing financial procedures, and ensuring compliance with US GAAP, industry regulations and company policies.
The role also involves active engagement in parent company and bank relations by being the primary point of contact for accounting and financial matters. Additionally, the Accounting Manager will play a key role in educating the CEO on accounting principles and financial matters to enhance strategic decision-making.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements at corporate level.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of all financial information, including work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and percentage of completion calculations.
  • Oversee the preparation and presentation of project financial performance reports to senior management
Revenue Recognition
  • Implement and manage the percentage completion method for revenue recognition on long-term landscape construction projects.
  • Monitor project progress, cost estimates, and budgets to accurately calculate revenue and expenses.
  • Coordinate with project managers to ensure accurate tracking of project milestones and financial performance.
Project Accounting
  • Manage and oversee the accounting for construction projects using the percentage of completion method.
  • Review project budgets, forecasts, and cost estimates and report to Officers
  • Monitor project costs and revenues, ensuring accurate allocation to the correct periods.
  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate and consistent application of percentage of completion accounting.
Bookkeeping
  • Oversee and manage day-to-day bookkeeping functions, ensuring all financial transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Maintain the general ledger, ensuring all entries are correct and balanced.
Cash Flow Management
  • Manage cash flow, ensuring timely collection of receivables and payment of obligations.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and provide recommendations to improve cash management.
Tax
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Prepare and file tax returns, including sales tax, property tax, and income tax.
  • Liaise with external tax advisors and auditors to ensure proper tax planning and compliance.
  • Keep abreast of changes in tax laws and regulations and assess their impact on the company.
Internal Control
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and accounting policies to ensure accurate and reliable financial reporting.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and assessments of internal controls and processes.
  • Reconcile bank statements and other financial accounts regularly.
Compliance and Audits
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in the United States (US GAAP) and other regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage external audits and reviews, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
Systems and Processes
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems and processes for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Implement and maintain construction accounting software and tools to streamline operations.
Team Management
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and professional development.
  • Oversee daily operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
Others
  • Seeks constant improvement in the work process; finds more efficient and less expensive ways for daily tasks.
  • Performs special projects and other miscellaneous duties as assigned by management.
  • Maintains high ethical standards in the workplace.
  • Reports all irregular issues and problems to management for a solution.
  • Maintains good communication with management, co-workers, and outside contacts.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working area.
  • Supports co-workers and other departments when requested by management.
  • Spanish proficiency desired in order to effectively communicate with general managers and landscaping personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS/CONDITIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience at landscape or construction companies who adopt USGAAP and percentage completion method, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks, Viewpoint), Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), and construction management software.
  • CPA or CMA certification is a plus

  • Japanese or Spanish is a big plus, but not required.
