Our client is a well-known, CA-based Grocery Retailer located in the Central Valley/East Bay market of CA. This role will oversee the entire in-house legal function as well as risk management for our $4B+ client company.

Vice President and General Counsel

Job Summary:

The Vice President and General Counsel oversees all aspects of legal affairs including loss prevention and legal services. This position is responsible for ensuring maximum protection of company’s legal rights through the direction of activities, including external counsel, to identify critical problems, opportunities to minimize risk and maximize profits. The Vice President provides the Board and Executive staff advice and guidance on legal requirements at the federal, state and regulatory levels. Keeps fully informed on all legislation affecting the organization's operations and of all new developments in corporate legal matters, and keeps all levels of management informed of applicable new laws and of the progress and results of court cases. This role develops a professionally competent staff of attorneys and legal and paralegal generalists and specialists.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Direct, oversee, and control legal activities and functions to ensure the organization's legal posture is developed and maintained
  • Establish legal services required by the organization and ensure that the organization is protected from any legal action
  • Provide officers and directors with advice and guidance in identifying the critical problems to which the application of legal principals yields the greatest opportunities for minimizing risks and maximizing profits
  • Work with all departments on developing and modifying policies and procedures to conform to legal requirements
  • Review and control department budget to support systematically planned programs of legal actions or defenses and to assure optimum deployment of resource within approved budget
  • Keep fully informed on all legislation affecting the organization's operations and of all new developments in corporate legal matters, and keep all levels of management informed of applicable new laws and of the progress and results of court cases
  • Develop a professionally competent staff of attorneys and legal and paralegal generalists and specialists
  • Serve as liaison with carefully selected outside legal firms and monitors and evaluates their activities
  • Plan and direct all aspects of an organization's legal affairs and guarantee maximum protection of its legal rights
  • Lead the defense of the organization in lawsuits and the prosecution of lawsuits on behalf of the organization against others
  • Provide legal expertise to other departments where needed

Education: Four-year college degree (or equivalent knowledge gained through formal education, specialized training, or additional job experience)
