The Transportation Project Manager is a senior-level leadership role responsible for directing complex roadway and bridge design initiatives across state and local transportation programs. This position provides strategic oversight of multi-phase transportation projects, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards, schedule commitments, and financial objectives. The role requires a strong client-facing presence, disciplined project execution, and the ability to mentor and elevate engineering teams while strengthening long-term public sector partnerships. The Transportation Project Manager plays a critical role in driving project performance, cultivating repeat business opportunities, and contributing to sustained organizational growth.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage IDOT Phase I, II, and/or III roadway and bridge design projects, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and successful delivery within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Provide strategic oversight of multiple concurrent transportation projects, proactively addressing shifting priorities, regulatory requirements, and resource allocations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for public agencies, municipalities, and state DOT stakeholders, building trusted, long-term client relationships.
  • Mentor, manage, and develop civil and transportation engineering staff, fostering accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Assess project backlog and staffing needs, identifying and resolving resourcing gaps to maintain delivery performance.
  • Drive execution of complex transportation initiatives while expanding responsibilities across additional jurisdictions and project phases.
  • Partner with business development efforts to identify and pursue transportation opportunities, including IDOT PTB pursuits, to support backlog growth.
  • Utilize MicroStation/OpenRoads and related design technologies to support project oversight and technical coordination.
  • Demonstrate forward-thinking leadership, calculated decision-making, and proactive problem solving in a high-demand, resource-constrained environment.

Qualifications
  • Eight to twelve plus years of hands-on experience delivering IDOT roadway and/or bridge design projects.
  • Proven project management experience across IDOT Phase I, II, and/or III projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor civil or transportation engineering teams.
  • Strong client-facing experience with public agencies, municipalities, and state DOT stakeholders.
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license or clear ability and intent to obtain licensure.
  • Experience working across multiple offices or geographically dispersed teams preferred.
  • Background in county and municipal transportation projects in addition to IDOT work preferred.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation/OpenRoads; familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Adobe software.
  • Demonstrated strengths in communication, analytical follow-through, proactive problem solving, and collaborative leadership.
