Position Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Vice President Logistics for a $9.5 billion privately owned food retailer. With over 420 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana. Has a private fleet with 300 tractors, 600 trailers, and 32,000 associates.
The Transportation Manager is responsible for the work activities of the transportation department – delivering groceries, non-edible merchandise and perishables to approximately 100 banner and non-banner customers. Route planning runs through this position. Also responsible for moving 60-80 backhauls a day returning toes, pallets, and other reverse logistic functions. Ensuring maximum usage of personnel and facilities. Integrates safety, customer service, associate development and fiscal strategies into daily work. Responsible for leading a team of eight to ten supervisors and over 130 drivers. Meet the needs of internal and external customers by ensuring product accuracy and on-time deliveries. Assist in developing a plan of action to meet and ensure our fiscal plan efficiently and accurately meets customer requirements while still lowering operating expenses and maximizing profits. Provide leadership and communication that ensures the success of ongoing safety practices and with the goal of a zero-incident culture. Develop policies, procedures and processes which promote a clean and safe work environment to minimize the risk of accidents. Interpret and administer labor agreements to meet the company’s and customer’s needs while maintaining positive management/labor relations. Collaborate on the development, implementation and evaluation of long-term and short-term business strategies to improve sales, reduce costs and make the company a better place to work.

Background Required:
  • Transportation management (3 years)
  • Route planning and cubing strategies
  • Union environment (enforcing and executing contracts)
  • Regulations (CSA, FMCSR, OSHA, DOT, ELD)
  • Driver recruiting, retention, onboarding, and development
  • Safety management (miles between accidents and hours between injuries)
  • Key performance indicator management (cubing, on time delivery, wage expense, empty miles)
  • P & L execution
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Education: High school diploma plus 18 months of additional training
  • Residence: Bedford Heights, OH (Relocation assistance provided)
