Technical Product Specialist - Heavy Duty Automotive Diagnostics

Join Australia's Leading Heavy-Duty Diagnostic Tools Supplier

Location: Melbourne (office-based) or Regional Australia (remote considered)
Salary: $110,000 - $140,000 + performance bonus
Experience Required: 5+ years in automotive/heavy-duty vehicles

About the Role

Are you a hands-on automotive technician who loves solving technical challenges AND enjoys sharing your knowledge with others? Our client is looking for someone who can bridge the gap between complex diagnostic technology and the workshops that depend on it.

In this role you'll be the technical expert who actively and conscientiously supports their merchant branch network (Repco, NAPA, specialist tool stores, etc.) and their workshop customers by demonstrating products, troubleshooting issues, building relationships, and ensuring clients get maximum value from their investment in diagnostic tools and technical equipment, with a particular focus on heavy-duty truck diagnostic tools.

Think of it as being a technical ambassador or evangelist: someone who genuinely understands the workshop floor, speaks the language of mechanics and technicians, and has the proactive attitude to reach out, educate, and support. This is NOT a sales role, but you will be supporting sales and representing the company and it's products to help sales growth.

What You'll Be Doing

Technical Support (40%)

  • Provide expert remote technical and product support to branches and end-user workshops
  • Troubleshoot diagnostic tool issues and guide users through technical challenges
  • Deliver remote product demonstrations using tools like TeamViewer

Proactive Outreach & Relationship Building (40%)

  • Proactively nurture relationships with branch representatives to ensure correct and relevant product knowledge to help them increase sales
  • Conduct product demos and training sessions for branch staff and workshop managers
  • Act as a trusted technical resource and brand ambassador in the heavy-duty vehicle sector
  • Build genuine connections with practical, no-nonsense workshop professionals

Projects & Development (20%)

  • Attend 5-10 trade shows annually across Australia supporting our larger merchant customers
  • Contribute technical insights to marketing content and training materials
  • Support product development feedback from real-world user experiences

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years hands-on experience in automotive repair, preferably heavy-duty vehicles or trucks
  • Strong technical background, ideally as a heavy-duty mechanic, automotive technician, or auto-electrician
  • Practical, real-world experience trumps formal qualifications (though certifications are valued)
  • Proven ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences

The Right Personality:

  • Proactive and curious - you don't wait to be asked; you reach out and make things happen and aren't afraid to pick up the phone
  • People-oriented - you genuinely enjoy helping others succeed and building relationships
  • Hands-on attitude - comfortable getting involved and taking initiative to get things done
  • Adaptable team player - happy to wear multiple hats in a lean, dynamic business
  • Low ego, high impact - you're here to solve problems, not climb a corporate ladder

What You're NOT:

  • A manager looking for your next step up
  • A traditional salesperson focused on closing deals and moving on
  • Someone waiting for the phone to ring

What's On Offer

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive base salary: $110,000 - $140,000 (based on experience)
  • Strong performance-based bonus structure
  • No company car required (remote demos are the norm)
  • Flexible work arrangements for regional candidates

Company Culture:

  • Small, established team
  • Everyone contributes and collaborates: no rigid hierarchies
  • Genuine opportunity to make an impact and shape the role
  • Work with cutting-edge diagnostic technology in a growing sector

Work Environment:

  • Office-based for Melbourne metro candidates
  • Remote work available for regional/non-metro candidates (hybrid not offered)
  • Minimal travel: most demos conducted remotely
  • Occasional interstate travel for trade shows and key events
