Supervisor Coding HIM

Northwest Chicago Suburbs

Our client is a 500 bed hospital that is magnet designated and has won numerous awards for clinical and operational excellence.

They are located in one of the most desirable areas of the Chicago suburbs and the location allows associates to commute from a wide variety of area in Chicagoland.

Our client has an immediate opening for a strong coding supervisor to improve and elevate their coding section to the next level of service.

Under the direction of the HIM Coding Manager, supervises day-to-day operations, provides developmental feedback, training & direction to coding and auditing staff in addition to conducting reviews for the purpose of ensuring the accuracy and quality of coding/auditing. Reviews all prospective payor financial classes for optimal Diagnoses Related Groups (DRG), Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APC), and modifier assignment through use there of.

 

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of coding staff including assisting the HIM Coding Manager with employee relations, performance management and staff development. Manages time and attendance reviewing and approving PTP. Eliminates operating issues, assists with problem resolution and is the first level of escalation for service difficulties.
  • Conducts monthly audits of coding/auditing staff, verifying accuracy, completeness and precision of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, & HCPCSs coding, including modifiers, units, and other variables impacting coding and billing providing monthly reports on results to individual staff and manager. Directs staff to correct identified errors. Instructs staff on error correction and appropriate coding . Advocates compliance with all third party billing and reimbursement requirements.
  • Completes all reviews utilizing coding accuracy technology (PwC SMART). Monitors usage of appropriate codes by HIM staff including in-depth analysis of patterns, volume of services, peer comparison and trending. Educates HIM staff, providing expertise on proper coding and billing practices to achieve optimal reimbursement for services performed.
  • Provides specialty training for all new coding and auditing staff, serving as the Subject Matter Expert for coding questions from staff. Assess staff for ongoing accuracy and provides additional instruction as needed to maintain competency of staff.
  • Develops educational materials for the coding, auditing staff and assists with medical staff and ancillary services training. Targets remedial areas and customizes materials for applicability in the NCH environment.
  • Assists with coding appeals as required. Provides supporting information and supplemental data as needed to achieve desired outcome.
  • Works with Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDI) Coordinator to reconcile monthly coding report and helps to resolve difficult coding issues/DRG mismatches.
  • Assists HIM leadership in personnel issues including interviews, hire recommendations, development, training, evaluation of performance and, when necessary, discipline and discharge of subordinate personnel. Supports a team focused environment which promotes individual growth and development and attainment of personal job-related goals
  • Inpatient and outpatient experience desired.

Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma required. Associates degree in a related field preferred.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is required in addition to certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • Minimum of three years hospital medical record experience and supervisory experience required.
  • Formal training in an ICD-10 CM/PCS training course, ICD-10 AHIMA approved trainer preferred.
  • Proficiency in Federal and State regulations as well as Coding Clinic guidelines.
