Job Description

Senior / Principal Hardware Electrical Engineer – Wireless Power & Inductive Charging Systems

This role cannot support visa sponsorship of any nature.

Position is located in New York City, NY. Relocation will be negotiated.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior or Principal Electrical Engineer to lead the design and development of next-generation wireless power transfer systems, including inductive, resonant, and mid-range (“gap”) over-the-air charging technologies.

This role focuses on high-efficiency, cable-free energy transfer across air gaps—from millimeters (Qi-like) to extended distances using resonant coupling or RF-based approaches.

The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in power electronics, electromagnetics, and system architecture, with the ability to take concepts from research through commercialization.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & System Design

  • Lead end-to-end design of wireless charging systems (Tx/Rx architecture)
  • Develop inductive and resonant coupling topologies for high efficiency and alignment tolerance
  • Design for air-gap power transfer (“gap charging”), including loosely coupled and spatially decoupled systems
  • Define system requirements for efficiency, thermal performance, EMI/EMC, and safety

Electromagnetics & Coil Design

  • Design and optimize:
    • Transmit/receive coils
    • Magnetic materials and shielding
  • Model coupling, field propagation, and misalignment tolerance
  • Use tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, HFSS, COMSOL

Power Electronics & Control

  • Develop high-frequency resonant converters and switching topologies
  • Design control systems for:
    • Voltage/current regulation
    • Foreign Object Detection (FOD)
  • Achieve high system efficiency (often >90% in modern systems)

Wireless / “Gap” Power Innovation

  • Work on mid-field and far-field wireless power transfer
  • Explore technologies such as:
    • Magnetic resonance coupling
    • RF / microwave power beaming
    • Capacitive coupling
  • Improve range, efficiency, and spatial freedom

System Integration

  • Collaborate with:
    • Mechanical engineering (packaging, alignment)
    • Firmware/DSP teams (communication over inductive links)
    • Battery systems and power management
  • Integrate communication protocols (NFC, I²C, custom inductive comms)

Validation & Compliance

  • Lead testing for:
    • EMI/EMC compliance
    • Thermal performance
    • Safety certifications (UL, CE, FCC, Qi, etc.)
  • Conduct failure analysis and reliability testing

Manufacturing & Productization

  • Drive DFM/DFT strategies
  • Support scaling from prototype → mass production
  • Define test systems for coil calibration and power validation

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering (PhD preferred)
  • 8–15+ years experience in:
    • Wireless power / inductive charging
    • Power electronics (SMPS, resonant converters)
  • Deep knowledge of:
    • Electromagnetics (Maxwell’s equations, coupling physics)
    • Analog and mixed-signal design
  • Hands-on lab expertise (oscilloscopes, VNAs, power analyzers)

Preferred / Differentiating Experience

  • PhD in:
    • Electromagnetics
    • Power electronics
    • RF systems or applied physics
  • Experience with:
    • Qi or AirFuel standards
    • High-power wireless charging (EV, robotics, industrial)
    • Over-the-air / spatial charging systems
  • Background in DSP or communication over inductive links
  • Published research or patents in wireless energy transfer

Key Technical Skills

  • Power electronics (DC-DC, resonant tanks, inverters)
  • High-frequency design (kHz → MHz range)
  • EM simulation & modeling
  • PCB design (high-current, low-loss layouts)
  • System modeling (SPICE, MATLAB, Python)
