Job Summary and Essential Job Duties:

The Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer position is ideal for an engineer with a strong mechanical design background and a solid understanding of optical component packaging, mounting and optical system integration. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing and developing opto-mechanical assemblies for both semiconductor, space-based and other customer applications. This will be a primarily on-site role with travel requirements of approximately 10%, including visits to customer sites or industry and educational conferences as needed.

The Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer will:

  • Lead or support the mechanical design of precision optical assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Integrate optical components into mechanical housings with appropriate alignment and tolerance strategies
  • Interface with optical designers to ensure mechanical layouts are compatible with optical performance
  • Ideal candidate will be able to perform simulation and FEA using ANSYS or NASTRAN to validate mechanical and thermal integrity of assemblies
  • Interpret and apply results from STOP (Structural, Thermal, Optical Performance) analyses to guide design decisions
  • Develop and validate thermal models for semiconductor imaging systems
  • Design fixtures supporting build of precision opto-mechanical assemblies as well as environmental testing of the same assemblies
  • Prepare customer facing design review material and present findings in large group review settings
  • Support manufacturing transitions to prototype and volume production
  • Support selection of materials vendors based on quality and capability metrics
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, and Metrology teams throughout the product lifecycle
