Position Summary

The Senior Estimator is responsible for developing accurate and competitive project quotations for heavy steel plate fabrication, structural components, CNC machining, and the production of tanks and pressure vessels. This role requires a deep understanding of complex fabrication processes, ASME codes, customer specifications, and machining operations. The position involves thorough review of technical documentation, coordination with internal teams and external suppliers, and direct communication with clients to deliver precise cost estimates and comprehensive proposals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed cost estimates based on project specifications, drawings, codes, and standards related to structural steel, plate fabrication, and pressure vessel manufacturing.

  • Evaluate scopes of work (SOW) and technical requirements to identify labor, materials, machining operations, and subcontracted services.

  • Interpret complex fabrication drawings, weld symbols, tolerances, and machining requirements, ensuring accurate cost forecasting.

  • Collaborate with internal teams—including production, procurement, engineering, QA/QC, and project management—to validate capacity, lead times, and manufacturing feasibility.

  • Communicate directly with clients to clarify scope details, resolve ambiguities, and align expectations regarding deliverables and schedules.

  • Obtain pricing from material suppliers and subcontractors; ensure alignment with current market conditions.

  • Identify technical and commercial risks and propose mitigation strategies within the bid package.

  • Prepare and submit formal quotations, including breakdowns of inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, and clarifications.

  • Support the business development process by participating in pre-bid meetings, customer presentations, and follow-up discussions.

  • Review purchase orders and awarded contracts to ensure consistency with the proposed scope, pricing, and schedule.

  • Foster strong customer relationships, focusing on long-term partnerships and repeat business opportunities.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of heavy steel fabrication, structural components, tank and vessel construction, and CNC machining practices.

  • Familiarity with ASME, AWS, and AISC codes and standards.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex fabrication drawings, technical specifications, and GD&T.

  • Skilled in developing estimates for welding, forming, machining, NDE, coatings, and pressure testing.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work directly with customers and vendors.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and industry-specific estimating tools (experience with Tekla PowerFab and Procore preferred).

  • High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s Degree in Welding, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related technical field; equivalent field experience may be considered.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy industrial fabrication, with at least 5 years dedicated to estimating work involving pressure vessels, structural steel, and machined components.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Occasional travel required for job walks, vendor visits, and customer meetings.

  • Must be able to work in a fabrication shop environment and safely navigate around heavy machinery and production areas.

  • Capable of sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently.
