South Port Marine- Service Manager

Located along the waterfront of the Fore River in Portland, Maine, South Port Marine is a well-maintained and protected full-service marina and boatyard, with over 170 wet slips that can accommodate yachts up to 150′ with drafts up to 8′. South Port Marine offers year-round wet storage and dry storage options, including indoor storage in their recently completed 12,000 square foot facility.

South Port Marine’s service department specializes in everything from seasonal engine maintenance to full engine replacements. Their trained and certified team ensures any task is completed safely and proficiently. In addition to engine servicing, the SPM team specializes in restoration, systems troubleshooting and repair, and more.

The Company is also a retailer for outboards engines brands including Mercury, Yamaha and Suzuki. They also carry Mercury inflatable boats, Fischer Panda Generators, and offer a full line of Selden Sta-Lok rigging products and services.

With over 170 slips accommodating vessels up to 150′, South Port Marina facility offers safe, accessible, family friendly dockage. Slips are available for rent by the night, week, season or year. Year round live-aboards are welcome.

The Service Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the complete boat shop and boatyard operations. Maintain appropriate/required productivity levels, meet/exceed marine practice safety standards and produce high quality results.
  • Hire, supervise daily operations, provide schedules and present annual performance reviews for the Yard Foreman and Mechanical Technicians.
  • Act as first contact and liaison between customer, manufacturer reps, yard foreman, technicians and parts department.
  • Communicate with service customers via telephone and in person in a manner that creates a trusting relationship thereby promoting customer retention and loyalty. Explain to customers the service needs necessary for their boat with emphasis on preventative maintenance. Oversee the program of inspecting boats, and advise/sell to customers the necessary maintenance and repairs based on the inspections.
  • Prepare accurate written estimates for service work and parts. Investigate if parts are covered by warranty.
  • Create work orders, collect appropriate customer deposits, and manage/oversee the work order database to include all pertinent information entry including customer/boat information, parts and labor. Ensure completion of all work order data entry to facilitate accurate and timely invoice production and meaningful productivity analysis.
  • Provide information to the yard foreman and assist with the job scheduling of the yard technicians.
  • Provide parts department with work order information, and assist in parts ordering.
  • Process warranty work and ensure timely reimbursement from the warranty providing company.
  • Maintain quality control of service jobs throughout the job process.
  • Ensure all service work is completed on time and within budget guidelines.
  • Handle payment transactions with customers.
  • Perform timely follow-up with customer.
  • Resolve service customer complaints.
  • Communicate and cooperate with other departments and personnel.
  • Update and maintain service records and manuals.
  • Generate reports as requested by management.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience Required:

  • Strong working knowledge of parts and supplies used in the maintenance and repair of commercial and pleasure boats (power and sailboats) up to 135 feet.
  • Strong retail sales experience, preferably marine services industry.
  • Ability to read/use technical manuals, parts books and drawings.
  • Ability to manage teams.
  • Integrity and strong work ethic.
  • Excellent customer service skills as well as communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain cool under pressure.
  • Computer proficiency to include Internet, MS Office products, especially Excel and Word, and DockMaster (or other marine services software).

Education Requirements:

Associate or Bachelor's Degree, or comparable job experience.
