Senior Substation P&C Design Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Protection & Control professional to support the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects, including renewable generation and grid interconnection facilities. This position will independently develop detailed P&C drawings, coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, and contribute to projects from early development through detailed design and construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop complete substation Protection & Control drawing packages, including:
    • Single-line and three-line diagrams
    • AC/DC schematics
    • Wiring and connection diagrams
    • Relay and protection panel layouts
    • Control and protection documentation
  • Design P&C systems for collector, interconnection, and other high-voltage substations.
  • Apply appropriate protection philosophies and engineering practices to project-specific requirements.
  • Produce and maintain detailed drawings using AutoCAD Electrical and related substation design tools.
  • Coordinate designs with physical substation, civil, structural, and power systems engineering teams.
  • Review third-party or subcontractor design packages for technical quality and completeness.
  • Support project managers and clients by addressing technical questions, design assumptions, and changing project requirements.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable utility requirements, codes, safety standards, and industry practices.
  • Support improvements to design templates, workflows, and engineering processes.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior designers and engineers when needed.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of substation Protection & Control design experience.
  • Strong production-level experience with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Hands-on experience developing substation schematics, wiring diagrams, SLDs, three-lines, and P&C design packages.
  • Good understanding of high-voltage substation equipment, relay applications, and protection schemes.
  • Ability to independently manage design assignments while coordinating with broader project teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent industry experience may also be considered.

Preferred Experience

  • Renewable generation, BESS, or utility interconnection projects.
  • Consulting or EPC project environments.
  • Substation-specific CAD/design platforms integrated with AutoCAD.
  • Coordination of subcontractors or multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Python, scripting, or engineering workflow automation.
  • EIT certification or similar technical credentials.
