Senior Protection and Control Engineer

Overview

We are helping a prominent consulting firm with hiring an experienced Protection & Controls Engineer to join its Substation Engineering team. This role focuses on designing power system protection schemes and supporting the specification, installation, commissioning, and testing of related equipment. You’ll work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team, applying standard engineering methods and practices to deliver complete designs. Work includes multiple moderate to large projects supporting electric utility clients across the United States.

What You’ll Do

In this position, you will contribute to (and often lead) protection and substation design efforts, including:

  • Supporting or leading scope definition, cost estimates, and schedule development

  • Reviewing and shaping protection philosophies and design approaches

  • Leading conceptual / preliminary design development

  • Performing and overseeing studies such as short circuit, voltage regulation, arc flash, and coordination

  • Selecting and specifying electrical equipment (e.g., switchgear, breakers, transformers, circuit switchers, ATS, generators, power panels)

  • Reviewing vendor/contractor submittals and bills of material

  • Producing and reviewing complete drawing packages, including:

    • Single-line diagrams

    • AC/DC schematics

    • Cable schedules and bills of material

    • Communications, logic, and interconnection diagrams

    • Panel layout, wiring, and termination diagrams

  • Coordinating with CAD/drafting teams to produce construction documents

  • Providing construction-phase support and resolving field/design issues

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations and technical evaluations using industry tools/software

  • Apply applicable codes, standards, and best practices to protection and control design

  • Follow internal quality processes (procedures, checklists, and review practices) to ensure high-quality deliverables

  • Compare design alternatives and assess technical and cost trade-offs

  • Develop material/equipment specifications for major components

  • Travel to project sites as needed to verify construction aligns with drawings/specifications

  • Other responsibilities may be assigned based on project needs

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program

  • 4+ years of experience supporting electric utility engineering projects

  • Strong analytical skills and sound engineering judgment

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver on deadlines

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; strong collaboration and stakeholder skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license

  • Experience with medium and/or high-voltage power system design

  • Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE/NEMA standards related to system protection and control
