  • Coordinate electrical, civil, structural, protection and control, and physical substation design activities.
  • Develop and review key substation deliverables, including:
    • Single-line diagrams
    • General arrangements and equipment layouts
    • Grounding and lightning protection
    • Cable, conduit, and trench routing
    • Control building layouts
    • HV bus, structures, and equipment arrangements
  • Manage engineering schedules, design reviews, technical risks, quality requirements, and project deliverables.
  • Provide technical direction to engineers, designers, and subcontracted engineering resources.
  • Review engineering packages for compliance with project specifications, applicable standards, constructability, and design quality.
  • Develop specifications and scopes for major substation equipment and external engineering services.
  • Support proposals with conceptual engineering, equipment selections, bills of material, technical clarifications, and engineering estimates.
  • Assist procurement teams with technical evaluation of vendors and equipment quotations.
  • Identify opportunities for design optimization, cost reduction, and value engineering.
  • Support commissioning, field engineering, and resolution of technical issues during project execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 12+ years of experience in utility, industrial, or renewable-energy substation engineering, or a master’s degree with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Significant experience with HV/EHV substations, including systems operating at 138 kV and above.
  • Strong knowledge of physical substation design, major equipment application, and multidisciplinary engineering coordination.
  • Experience leading complex engineering projects and directing engineers and designers.
  • Ability to manage technical scope, schedules, budgets, and customer requirements simultaneously.

Preferred Background

  • Active U.S. Professional Engineer (PE) license with ability to obtain additional state registrations as required.
  • Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution substation design standards and practices.
  • Experience with transformers, circuit breakers, conductors, auxiliary AC/DC systems, grounding, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.
  • Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, and applicable utility standards.
  • Experience developing complete engineering packages where customer specifications may be limited or evolving.
  • Field testing, commissioning, or construction support experience.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and related engineering design tools.
  • Strong customer-facing communication, technical decision-making, and troubleshooting skills.
