Senior Power System Studies Engineer
Location: Remote across US or Canada
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Power Systems Studies Engineer to support complex renewable energy, generation, and grid-interconnection projects. This role will lead advanced electrical studies, develop system models, support collection system design, and provide technical guidance across multiple projects while working closely with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead power system studies including short-circuit, load flow, arc-flash, protective device coordination, harmonics, grounding, ampacity, and power quality analysis.
- Develop and validate electrical system and interconnection models for renewable generation, BESS, substations, and related infrastructure.
- Support collection system design, including cable sizing, routing, and equipment selection.
- Prepare and review technical reports, calculations, specifications, and engineering deliverables.
- Use ETAP and other industry-standard platforms to perform detailed system analysis.
- Apply Python or similar programming tools to automate engineering workflows and improve study efficiency.
- Review project documentation for technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for clients and communicate study findings and engineering recommendations.
- Support development of project scopes, schedules, budgets, and technical proposals.
- Coordinate engineering activities across multiple concurrent projects.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on complex power system problems.
- Develop improved analytical methods, tools, and engineering processes where appropriate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- EIT certification.
- Strong experience performing power system studies for renewable energy, energy storage, generation, substations, or utility infrastructure.
- Proficiency with tools such as ETAP, CDEGS, CYMCAP, PSS/E, or PSLF.
- Experience working with dynamic models supplied by equipment manufacturers.
- Strong Python or similar programming experience for engineering automation.
- Ability to independently manage technical assignments and multiple active projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting technical findings to clients.
Preferred Background
- 5+ years of power systems engineering experience, particularly in studies, generation, substations, or renewable energy.
- Experience with utility-scale solar PV and battery energy storage projects.
- Background in grid interconnection studies and electrical collection systems.
- Experience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical lead across a portfolio of projects.
