Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Protection & Control Technician to support field service, commissioning, and testing activities. This role is ideal for someone who is self-motivated, technically strong, and comfortable taking ownership of assignments from planning through completion. The position involves work on electrical systems and equipment ranging from 480V to 345kV.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform protection and control work in support of electrical maintenance, testing, commissioning, and field service activities.
- Complete physical wiring tasks and verify the accuracy of all non-factory field wiring.
- Commission protective relays and confirm proper operation of associated control systems.
- Set up and configure communication and networking equipment, including LAN and WAN infrastructure.
- Verify functionality and performance of installed equipment before project completion.
- Take ownership of assigned projects from start to finish.
- Support outage planning and coordinate activities required for shutdowns and commissioning work.
- Work closely with local protection and control oversight, engineering, and operations teams to identify and address temporary or inadequate protection conditions.
- Plan and schedule SCADA checkout activities.
- Assist field service crews during maintenance projects, shutdowns, startups, and electrical testing assignments.
- Troubleshoot technical issues in the field and help resolve protection and control system problems.
- Prepare reports, service documentation, and test records.
Technical Scope
- Test and troubleshoot advanced protective relays and schemes, including:
- Distance protection
- Directional power protection
- Reverse power protection
- Negative sequence protection
- Differential protection
- Motor protection
- Generator protection
- Work with a variety of relay platforms commonly used in industrial and utility environments, including SEL and GE-based applications.
- Support transfer trip and pilot protection schemes such as DCB, DTT, and POTT.
Relevant Software Experience
- Working knowledge of software and tools used for relay configuration, commissioning, and testing, including:
- SEL 5010
- AcSELerator QuickSet
- AcSELerator Architect
- GE URPC / Enervista
- Cooper SMP Manager
- SG Config
- Doble Protection Suite
- HyperTerminal or Tera Term
- Other software needed to complete commissioning and checkout activities
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology preferred, though equivalent education and hands-on experience will also be considered.
- Approximately 4+ years of relevant experience in protection and control, field testing, commissioning, or a related electrical services role.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and AutoCAD.
- Valid driver’s license required, along with the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be available for periodic to frequent domestic travel depending on project needs.
- Must have at least 3 years of experience operating a vehicle with a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to pass a fit-for-duty physical examination.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and stoop for extended periods.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for shifts that may last 12 hours or longer.
- Strong hearing and visual awareness for field work.
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments and in varying weather conditions.
