Carolina PRG has partnered with a $2B+ publicly traded company that is headquartered in Charlotte, NC that is seeking a Senior Manager, Technical Accounting to help establish and lead a newly created Technical Accounting team. Reporting to the Sr. Director, Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting, this hands-on role will lead complex and non-routine accounting analyses, strengthen technical accounting documentation and controls, and support sustainable remediation following a financial statement restatement and the identification of material weaknesses and significant deficiencies.
The Senior Manager will hire, onboard, develop, and manage one Senior Accountant. The team will provide timely, practical, audit-ready guidance; maintain accounting policies and standards-adoption processes; provide routine and ad-hoc training to Accounting and Controlling teams on policies and technical accounting matters; and partner with Financial Reporting, Corporate Accounting, Legal, Tax, Treasury, FP&A, Internal Audit, the second line SOX function, external auditors, and outside advisors.
**Hybrid schedule of 3 days in office per week**
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Accounting
- Serve as a U.S. GAAP subject-matter expert and advise on complex and non-routine transactions, including revenue recognition, leases, business combinations, goodwill and intangibles, debt, derivatives, stock compensation, equity, contingencies, restructuring, impairment, and discontinued operations.
- Lead research, consultation, and conclusions; prepare and review clear, concise, audit-ready memoranda and position papers documenting facts, authoritative guidance, judgments, alternatives, conclusions, and financial statement implications.
- Promote consistent application of accounting conclusions across brands, legal entities, reporting periods, and related processes; advise Accounting leadership on proposed transactions, contracts, and significant events.
- Coordinate consultations with external auditors and advisors while maintaining internal ownership, accountability, and timely resolution.
Remediation, Controls, and Governance
- Support remediation of material weaknesses and significant deficiencies by strengthening technical accounting governance, review precision, documentation, evidence retention, and control execution.
- Partner with process owners, SOX, Internal Audit, and external auditors to ensure relevant controls are appropriately designed, documented, implemented, and ready for validation and independent testing.
- Define and reinforce consultation protocols, review expectations, escalation requirements, and evidence standards; perform root-cause analysis and drive sustainable corrective actions.
- Provide technical accounting support to adjacent remediation areas when policy interpretation or accounting analysis is required.
Policies, Standards, and Capability Building
- Monitor new accounting standards and interpretive guidance; lead impact assessments, implementation plans, stakeholder coordination, documentation, training, and follow-up.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, templates, playbooks, decision frameworks, procedures, and knowledge repositories that improve consistency and reduce reliance on individual knowledge.
- Design and deliver targeted technical accounting training for Accounting and cross-functional stakeholders.
Team Leadership, Process Improvement, and Collaboration
- Recruit, hire, onboard, coach, and manage one Senior Accountant; establish clear responsibilities, development objectives, review standards, workload priorities, and accountability.
- Build a collaborative, high-performing culture grounded in technical excellence, ownership, intellectual curiosity, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
- Standardize the technical accounting intake, scoping, research, review, approval, and retention processes; establish practical KPIs for consultation volume, aging, due dates, policy updates, standards adoption, and audit requests.
- Use workflow, document management, analytics, artificial intelligence, and other technology to improve research efficiency, version control, transparency, consistency, and institutional knowledge, with appropriate review and governance.
- Partner with Financial Reporting on presentation and disclosures, serving as a member of the team assisting with document production as needed without owning SEC filing production; communicate conclusions, risks, actions, and open decisions clearly to both accounting and non-accounting stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field and active CPA license.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with substantial technical accounting responsibility, including public-company experience in addition to public accounting experience.
- Strong U.S. GAAP knowledge and demonstrated ability to produce defensible, audit-ready technical accounting documentation.
- Experience supporting material weakness or significant deficiency remediation, a financial statement restatement, or another control-challenged or transformation environment.
- Prior people leadership, coaching, or formal review responsibility, with the ability to hire and develop a highly collaborative team.
- Strong judgment, project management, analytical, written, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines without sacrificing quality.
