Senior Energy Engineer

This is a Pittsburgh-based position that supports our client’s growing pipeline of Energy Services work throughout Western Pennsylvania and beyond. The Senior Energy Engineer plays a critical role in the development, award, and execution of energy efficiency and infrastructure modernization projects. This position will report to headquarters and serve as a technical resource to both sales and operations teams.



OVERVIEW

The Senior Energy Engineer is responsible for identifying and developing energy efficiency and cost reduction strategies at client facilities across a diverse range of sectors. You will lead technical development through all phases of project delivery—including energy audits, proposal support, detailed design, construction oversight, commissioning, and measurement & verification.


In addition to direct project execution, the Senior Energy Engineer will mentor junior engineers, contribute to the growth of the engineering team’s capabilities, and stay current with emerging technologies.

This role requires an entrepreneurial mindset, broad technical experience, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for customer care and sustainable energy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and analyze energy and operational improvement opportunities at client facilities.
  • Perform detailed energy audits and assessments across sectors such as government, education, healthcare, and commercial/industrial.
  • Calculate baseline energy usage and projected savings; develop M&V methodologies in accordance with IPMVP standards.
  • Develop comprehensive financial justification reports, integrating utility, operational, and ancillary savings.
  • Provide technical support during project development, proposal preparation, and sales efforts.
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations; communicate technical concepts in a client-friendly way.
  • Lead or coordinate detailed design, equipment specification, and construction support.
  • Oversee and contribute to commissioning and post-installation verification.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues during project implementation or ongoing system performance.
  • Support development of as-built documentation and ensure proper turnover to clients
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in one or more energy efficiency technologies and share best practices with the broader team.
  • Maintain working knowledge of HVAC, BAS controls, and central utility plant operations.
  • Adhere to all company and customer safety protocols.
  • Travel as needed to project sites (valid driver's license required).


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Energy, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience in energy engineering and project development.
  • PE license strongly preferred.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar credential preferred.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE Level 2 & 3 audits and Investment Grade Audits (IGA).
  • Proficiency with building simulation tools (e.g., Trane Trace 3D+, Carrier HAP) and energy modeling software.
  • Experience with retrofit/renovation engineering and construction practices.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple consulting disciplines on complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, BAS controls, and central plant operations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead engineering efforts and work collaboratively across departments and with clients.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and other business and engineering tools.
