Senior Controls Engineer
This position is located in Philadelphia, PA HYBRID Role.
Our client is a leading Energy Services Company that reduces the energy and water consumption of their customers through building upgrades and on-going Energy Management Services. They offer Guaranteed Energy Savings projects that create a fully integrated end-to-end service backed by a performance-based contract. This company manages the upgrade from start to finish and offers a range of funding options. They offer Building Automation Systems in new builds and retrofits as well as support services that include maintenance, reporting, monitoring and utility bill management. The company offer’s it’s clients a unique Services Agreement, where cost savings are achieved by reducing building energy consumption and they are shared between the customer and the Company who funds the necessary building upgrades upfront without needing any capital or debt from the client. So the client gets cost savings AND millions of dollars in building upgrades without putting any money of their own.
We are seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to join our Clients team in Philadelphia, PA.
OVERVIEW:
The Senior Controls Optimization Engineer will possess extensive experience in designing, implementing, and optimizing HVAC Building Automation System (BAS) and Energy Management Systems. As a senior-level engineer, you will play a key role in assessing existing systems, identifying opportunities for improvement, and executing strategies to maximize energy efficiency and system
performance.
The engineer also manages the development of scope, price, and energy savings for clients. The candidate must be goal-driven and use a team approach to develop innovative solutions. Candidates who can balance engineering knowledge, experience, creative solutions, thorough and comprehensive problem-solving abilities will be successful. You will be developing the most efficient future ASHRAE controls strategies and sequences of operation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct on-site assessments in prospective buildings
- Collaborates with solutions engineers, BAS Techs and or Smart Buildings Groups to ensure the controls ECMs are evaluated for total energy savings
- Develop engineering solutions to help clients achieve financial, technical, operational, and environmental goals
- ASHRAE Level III and preconstruction experience
- Perform and/or manage assessments from inception to contract
- Define scopes and pricing for BAS driven energy conservation measures
- Assist in the client facing sales presentation

- Conduct thorough evaluations of existing building automation systems, including controls, components, and sequences of operation
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, develop specifications, and implement system enhancements
- Lead system commissioning efforts, ensuring proper installation, configuration, and functionality of building automation controls
- Perform detailed analysis of system performance data to identify trends, anomalies, and areas for improvement
- Develop and implement control modifications and adjustments to enhance energy efficiency and operational reliability
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians within the organization
- Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in building automation and energy management
- Collaborate with clients to understand their unique requirements and deliver tailored solutions that meet their objectives
- Act as a subject matter expert on building automation systems and energy management controls, providing insights and recommendations to stakeholders as needed

- Proficient in Microsoft office suite
- Proficient in Salesforce
- Advanced knowledge of energy best practices/codes (ASHRAE, IESNA, NEC etc.)
- Experience in seeing projects through to implementation
- Technical experience with energy efficiency technologies
- Can visualize multiple building components as part of a larger plan to optimize efficiency
- Operational experience with electrical installations – low voltage, power source, panel build/install, and communications trunks
- Knowledgeable with controls construction documentation and processes: RFIs, submittals, specifications, and testing
- Operational experience with HVAC system types: VAVs, VVTs, Dual Duct, four/two-pipe FCU, Heat Pumps, chillers, and boilers
- Experience developing controls solutions including writing scopes and sequences for bid
- Familiar with old controls and devices: pneumatics, inlet vanes and ability to upgrade to DDC
- Familiar with integration methods and what data can be pulled from third party equipment
- Familiar with ALC product line and other platforms
- Familiar with BAS systems – sensors and instrumentation for system architecture
- Can read drawings, schedules, common control loops and common optimization strategies for: valves, meters, and airflow-stations
- Understands control theory and can tune PID loops
- Analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering or equivalent related field experience, training and education
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in developing, implementing, optimizing building automation systems and energy management controls.
- Proficiency in industry-standard building automation protocols: Haystack, BACnet, Modbus
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Demonstrated experience in system commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimization
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make data-driven decisions
- Relevant industry certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP), or Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) are highly
desirable. - Experience with ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) or Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) is a plus.
