Senior Controller
The Senior Controller position is with a top-tier Fortune 100 company. This position pays between $130 - 185K + 15-20% target bonus. Position is remote work from home with a requirement to go into the office when needed, estimated 1-2 days in office. We are looking for a Senior Controller to join a new team responsible for supporting a very large client. The individual will help shape a new operating model in partnership with the client that promotes technology driven efficiency and controlled processes. Given the fund structure is relatively new to the market, our ambition is to become the operations and accounting industry leader for this type of fund. The Senior Controller will be part of a dedicated client service team. The team will be responsible for both investment level and consolidated fund level accounting and reporting deliverables. This individual will oversee a team supporting the investment level financial reporting requirements of property owner entities, related taxable REIT subsidiaries, joint venture entities and other related structures. Both the fund and this team are expected to grow significantly over the coming years.
Job Description:
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supports staff in areas of staffing, selection, training, development, coaching, mentoring, measuring, appraising and rewarding performance. Focused on retention.
Client Service:
Troubleshoots escalated issues and ensures that internal and external client requests are handled timely, accurately, and focused on customer service. Creates a positive customer experience by opening and maintaining constructive and reliable lines of communication. Participate in recurring meetings with the client, adding value where needed.
Monitors Financial Performance:
Manages and reviews data compiled by staff ahead of submission to the client. Ensures (financial) covenant monitoring and calculations are accurate and timely.
New Business Participation:
May participate in new business proposals, review new contracts and assist with onboarding new funds or initiating new business lines.
Contact with the Fund Team and Clients:
Contact point for fund level team and internal management.
Financial reporting packages:
Review and verify financial information including monthly, quarterly and annual reporting packages (regular and ad-hoc) prepared by your team prior to submittal to client and external parties (i.e., lenders and investors). Financial reporting is generally based on US GAAP (historical cost or fair value) however knowledge of IFRS would be helpful. This role is generally responsible for preparation of promote calculations and hypothetical liquidation calculations. You will supervise financial statement audits and draft annual audit report for client and audit firm review. You will also be responsible for guiding your team on proper accounting treatment for various complex transactions (i.e., acquisitions, dispositions, refinancings, syndications, investor buyouts and other organizational restructures)
Treasury Function:
Ensure sufficient cash on hand for all entities. Works with client on timing of capital calls and distributions as needed. Reviews monthly bank account reconciliations.
Risk Management:
Supports senior management team in the management of risk and compliance activities. Manages financial/legal/tax risks and ensures a suitable control framework is in place.
Lease Administration:
Manages team to ensure required reviews are executed timely. Reviews escalation/CAM calculation for income budgeting/billing estimates and annual true ups.
Job requirements:
- Degree from a four-year college or university program with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or related field required.
- A minimum of seven years of accounting experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Prior experience in real estate accounting and analytics is preferred.
- Requires prior supervisory experience and experience with real estate accounting or reporting software systems.
- Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex business documents. Ability to effectively write reports, manuals, speeches and articles using distinctive style. Ability to effectively respond, verbally and written, to sensitive issues, complex inquiries or complaints. Ability to make effective presentations on general topics.
- Ability to inspire and motivate employees and client groups to take desired action. Requires a high level of commitment to customer service, whether co-workers or clients.
- Requires in-depth knowledge of financial terms and principles. Conducts complex financial/business analysis including the preparation of complex reports.
- Advanced technical financial skills and comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, FASB standards.
- Experience with Non Traded REITs, Public REITs and/or open ended funds a plus.
- Ability to identify and analyze problems with limited information, then recommend more than one resolution option. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills.
- Advance economics, math and analytical skills and ability to apply them.
- Knowledge of real estate terms, definitions, and real estate analytical methodology.
- Knowledge of Company financial systems as well as internal and external information sources. Advanced knowledge of computer software and hardware (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite Products with focus on Excel).
- Ability to work in multiple accounting and/or reporting software applications, with Yardi platform experience strongly preferred.
- Decisions made with thorough understanding of procedures, company policies, and business practices to achieve general results and deadlines. Responsible for setting work and/or project deadlines. Setting and supervising deadlines for direct reports. Errors in judgment may cause short-term impact to clients and department.
An additional requirement for this role is the ability to comply with COVID-19 health and safety protocols including COVID-19 proof of vaccination when required.
