Senior Controller - Fund Accounting

The Remote Senior Controller - Fund Accounting position is with a top-tier Fortune 100 company. This position pays between $120 - 185K + 10-20% target bonus. We are looking for a Senior Controller to support real estate debt funds, you will work in an ambitious and growing environment. In this role, you will lead and manage approximately 1- 3 accounting professionals while providing guidance to the team. You will be involved in global initiatives focusing on standardization of business processes and implementation of new processes and policies. Understands client requirements and ensures consistent, accurate and timely reporting.

Job Description:

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Review timely and accurate quarterly and annual financial statements for both large open-ended commingled debt fund and smaller closed-end separate accounts.
  • Responsible for technical accounting support for global debt real estate transactions including loan closings, disposition, partial repayment, loan leverage, re-structure, re-financing, loan modification and other major transaction-related matters.
  • Able to provide timely advice on technical accounting and financial reporting matters to accounting teams and all business functions.
  • Oversee all aspects of fund accounting and reporting including month and quarter end process, capital calls, distributions, redemptions , ensuring fund unit value and units are accurately recorded and other transactions as applicable to ensure that all information delivered to the client and investor is complete and encompasses all transactions for the applicable reporting period.
  • Able to prepare transaction accounting memos (including but not restricted to reviewing transaction closing documents and journal entries) with cooperation with property and fund team to address specific accounting and financial reporting matters such as incentive fee and multi-tiered management fee calculation.
  • Able to research emerging accounting issues related to the Company’s global financial reports as required under US GAAP and IFRS.
  • Assist in establishing accounting policies for the Company and provide training to accounting teams related to existing accounting policies, new accounting policies, and other technical updates.
  • Interact and coordinate with various departments, i.e. fund accounting, fund performance team, loan servicer, tax compliance, portfolio management, legal compliance and asset management, etc. each quarter for routine and non-routine transaction updates.
  • Able to work with the accounting team and the auditors to explain the Company’s positions on complicated and/or technical accounting topics during the interim audit and year-end audit

Job requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years of accounting or auditing background with strong analytical, technical, and communication skills (written and oral) is required;
  • 3-5 years of real estate accounting experience a plus.
  • Previous experience working for a public accounting firm is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of all entity information, documents, and structuring considerations, including relevant GAAP, IFRS, and US tax
  • Solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles as it relates to fair market value of real estate, and/or related investments.
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple processes within tight deadlines while responding to various requests from many parties.
  • A candidate must have strong research and analytical skills and current knowledge of US GAAP and IFRS.
  • In addition, the applicant must have strong business skills to understand new topics and issues quickly, and communicate such matters to a global audience. Preference will be given to those candidates with experience in Commercial Real Estate Fund Accounting.
  • Knowledge of accounting for senior mortgage and mezzanine investments a plus.
  • Knowledge of REIT structures a plus
  • Ability to effectively listen to co-workers and respond to their requests.
  • Ability to understand and communicate in English, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to and has sufficient knowledge of computer software currently utilized by the Company (Yardi).
