Our client, a fast growing, PE Backed government contractor, is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join its growing finance team. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who operates with minimal supervision, brings exceptional accuracy to every task, and thrives in a collaborative environment. This role requires broad technical accounting knowledge spanning multiple disciplines—from tax compliance to lease accounting—and the ability to take ownership of complex accounting areas from day one.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Fixed Assets & Capital Expenditures
- Manage the full fixed asset lifecycle, including additions, disposals, transfers, and depreciation calculations, ensuring accuracy and completeness of the fixed asset register.
- Account for capital software expenditures, applying appropriate capitalization criteria in accordance with GAAP and internal policies (ASC 350-40).
- Conduct periodic physical asset inventories and reconcile results to the general ledger.
Tax Compliance
- Prepare income tax workpapers and supporting schedules for federal, state, and local filings; coordinate with external tax advisors as needed.
- Manage sales & use tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including preparation, filing, and remittance of returns.
- Administer personal property tax filings, ensuring timely and accurate submissions for all applicable jurisdictions.
Payroll Accounting
- Oversee payroll accounting entries, reconciliations, and accruals to ensure payroll-related expenses are properly recorded in the general ledger.
- Coordinate with HR/payroll processing to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate period-end reporting.
Goodwill & Intangible Assets
- Perform accounting for goodwill and identifiable intangible assets arising from business combinations, including amortization schedules and impairment assessments in accordance with ASC 350.
- Maintain detailed documentation supporting valuation assumptions and annual impairment test procedures.
Lease Accounting (ASC 842)
- Administer end-to-end ASC 842 lease accounting, including initial recognition of right-of-use assets and lease liabilities, subsequent measurement, and related disclosures.
- Monitor the lease portfolio for modifications, renewals, and terminations; update lease schedules and ensure timely remeasurement.
Debt Accounting
- Record and reconcile debt instruments, including term loans, revolving credit facilities, and related issuance costs and interest expense under the effective interest method.
- Prepare debt rollforward schedules and support covenant compliance reporting.
General Accounting & Close
- Prepare and post complex journal entries with precision; maintain and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Support the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, consistently meeting deadlines with a near-perfect accuracy rate.
- Assist in the preparation of internal financial statements and management reporting packages.
- Research and document technical accounting issues; draft accounting position papers as needed.
- Support internal and external audit requests by providing thorough, well-organized workpapers and clear explanations.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and proactively implement solutions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with demonstrated expertise across multiple technical accounting disciplines.
- Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 350, ASC 360, ASC 740, ASC 842, and debt accounting standards.
- Hands-on experience with: fixed assets, capital software expenditures, income tax, sales & use tax, personal property tax, payroll accounting, goodwill and intangible assets, ASC 842 lease accounting, and debt accounting.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy—a near-perfect track record in financial reporting.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal direction; strong self-management and prioritization skills.
- Collaborative team player who communicates effectively and supports colleagues across functional areas.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research complex accounting topics and reach well-supported conclusions.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, and data modeling).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is strongly preferred.
- Public accounting experience (Big 4 or regional firm) is a significant plus.
- Experience with lease accounting software (e.g., LeaseQuery, CoStar Real Estate Manager, or similar).
- Prior experience in a multi-entity or multi-jurisdictional accounting environment.
- Familiarity with ASC 805 (Business Combinations) or M&A transaction accounting a plus.
