Senior Accountant
Our client is a Spokane-based group of heavy industrial dealerships. With locations in 4 states, they serve a 5-state region and are seeking a Senior Accountant to report to the Controller. The person will play a vital part in managing key accounting functions, including financial reporting, month-end close, tax compliance, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory management. They will work closely with the Finance Manager to ensure accuracy and efficiency in our financial processes while adhering to GAAP and best accounting practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the integrity of financial systems and recording of transactions through the exercise of “best accounting practices” and application of GAAP.
- Review the monthly financials to help the Finance Manager explain the results.
- Tax & Audit: work with the CPA firm to review and pay out tax distributions to partners; lead the annual financial audit; review all state and local tax returns prepared by staff; maintain a list of tax returns.
- Responsible for leading month-end close, including the calculation, preparation, and review of journal entries to ensure compliance with GAAP.
- Manage chart of accounts to support and enhance accounting, tax, and overall business functionality.
- Prepare and review supporting documentation and reconciliations for journal entries and balance sheet accounts.
- Participate in special projects, such as acquisitions, divestitures, etc. as needed.
- Lead staff accountants in execution of key general ledger activities.
- Oversee the GL and Payroll Accountant’s daily cash report to management. Review the 13-week cash forecast prepared by the Finance Manager to help you understand the company’s cash position and liquidity.
- Accounts Receivable: review past due AR balances weekly; maintain and improve AR policies and procedures; review and approve all credit memos; approve any bad debt write-offs; review the weekly AR report prepared by the AR Specialist to help keep the AR as current as possible and minimize our day’s sales outstanding on the balance sheet.
- Accounts Payable: maintain controls around the keeping and issuance of paper check stock; approve ACH’s through online banking system; review weekly vendor payments and sign checks; help A/P with transactional coding to the general ledger when needed.
- Payroll: help to manage Time Clock Plus as a timekeeping system; review payrolls and payroll tax returns prepared by the payroll accountant; review and approve the bi-weekly payrolls and monthly commission payrolls; approve final payment of payroll, benefits and payroll taxes.
- Monthly commissions: review the monthly commission calculations and direct accounting staff on making journal entries and reconciling the commission accrual account every month.
- Inventory: work with the Finance Manager and Purchasing Specialist to ensure that there are controls in place to safeguard inventories and ensure that inventories are properly valued at month-end at the lower cost or market.
- Fixed Assets: direct staff on accounting for capital expenditures and ensure that internal WTs are setup as needed; track capital expenditures so that they can be accounted for in the company’s fixed asset listing, capitalized in the GL when placed in service and depreciated/amortized appropriately; maintain fixed asset tracking system to account for the net book value of the assets and record depreciation expense.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An undergraduate degree in Business or a related field is preferred
- US GAAP knowledge is required
- 4+ years of progressive and full-cycle accounting experience
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite specifically Excel, Word & Outlook
- Proficiency in ERP tool(s) (Sage Software experience is a plus)
- Capable of explaining the “why” behind something and ensure that appropriate group of people are informed and consulted
COMPENSATION
- Base salary of up to $90k.
