Safety Specialist

Responsibilities
  • Leads the safety process between various city, state and federal agencies to assure that the operation is in compliance with legal and company policy in these areas.
  • Supports internal customers by serving as subject matter expert in assigned areas by interpreting regulations, providing information to address a customer need and provide guidance in the development of programs, and policy.
  • Works with management to minimize lost time and reportable accidents. Investigates incidents, recommends corrective action and coordinates communication.
  • Effectively motivate people, to enlist needed cooperation in implementing effective safety programs; ability to manage multiple priorities and work with personnel at all organizational levels.
  • Tracks and monitors location audits and follow up to ensure items are completed in a timely fashion. Notify appropriate dept. and employees of any adverse inspections (missing guards, chemicals without labels, forklifts with missing seatbelts...etc.)
  • Develops, implements and maintains safety procedures and programs necessary to improve the safety program's effectiveness. Monitors adherence to safety program policies and procedures in the plant and reports discrepancies to plant management. Provides leadership in ISO, responsible for maintaining the safety ISO certification. Actively participates in plant conformance requirements for ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001.
  • Develops and delivers safety training to employees, supervisors, and plant management to support developed programs. Updates safety procedures.
  • Chairs the plant Joint Health and Safety Committee. Confers with managers to assist in specific clarification of details associated with safety process. Directs process changes in conjunction with managers to maintain a safe, healthy workplace throughout the division. Manages ISHES budget.
  • Providing support to the employees and/or the general public if the company receives complaints, accidents/incidents, researching details and notifying appropriate department and management of adverse conditions, complaints, corrective actions
  • Attends industry specific meetings, when necessary, to improve knowledge and understanding of issues, concerns, trends and enforcement actions arising in various geographic areas.
  • Gathers and analyzes available information from MSHA and compares them to yard/Vehicle/employee conditions to determine whether circumstances are compliant. Incorporate the ability to effectively investigate issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulations and laws.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university; or four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent experience can include a combination of direct safety supervision in an industrial environment and safety training instruction.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of employees within the corporation and outside contacts.
  • Ability to complete projects and duties as assigned in an accurate and timely fashion.
