DOT / FMCSA Safety Compliance Director

Role Summary

The DOT / FMCSA Safety Compliance Director is a senior, client-facing leader responsible for guiding clients through DOT and FMCSA regulatory compliance. This role serves as a trusted advisor to DOT-regulated organizations, leading audits, developing compliance programs, and supporting clients through complex regulatory challenges.

In addition to direct client engagement, this position provides oversight and direction to internal administrative support personnel who assist with documentation, reporting, scheduling, and compliance record management related to client services.

Primary Responsibilities

Client Advisory & Compliance Leadership

• Serve as the primary DOT/FMCSA compliance advisor for assigned
• Provide expert guidance on FMCSA regulations (49 CFR), including driver qualification files, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, drug & alcohol testing programs, accident registers, and safety management controls.
• Translate regulatory requirements into practical, audit-ready compliance
• Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with client leadership, safety teams, and operations personnel.

DOT Audits & Regulatory Support

• Support DOT audits, compliance reviews, new entrant audits, and focused investigations for clients.
• Prepare clients through file reviews, mock audits, corrective action planning, and documentation remediation.
• Review audit findings and guide clients through corrective action responses and long-term compliance strategies.

Safety Program Development

• Design, review, and enhance DOT safety and compliance programs tailored to each client’s
• Develop and update policies, procedures, manuals, and compliance documentation aligned with FMCSA requirements.
• Assist clients in building scalable safety programs that reduce violations, improve CSA scores, and withstand regulatory scrutiny.

Training & Client Education

• Deliver client-facing DOT compliance and safety training for drivers, supervisors, and

• Educate clients on audit trends, enforcement priorities, and regulatory

Incident Review & Risk Mitigation

• Review DOT-recordable accidents and safety incidents for compliance accuracy and risk
• Assist clients with accident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action
• Proactively identify compliance gaps and recommend risk mitigation

Administrative Oversight (Internal Support)

• Provide direction and oversight to internal administrative support staff assisting with client compliance activities.
• Review and ensure accuracy of client-facing compliance documentation, reports, and audit
• Coordinate with administrative personnel to ensure timely completion of client
• Serve as the subject matter authority for administrative staff on DOT/FMCSA

Skills & Qualifications

Technical Expertise

• Advanced knowledge of FMCSA regulations (49 CFR), DOT audits, and CSA/SMS
• Proven experience advising DOT-regulated clients through audits and compliance
• Strong understanding of safety management systems and corrective action
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and compliance documentation

Leadership & Client-Facing Skills

• Ability to lead and direct support

Experience

• 7–10+ years of experience in DOT/FMCSA safety compliance, transportation safety, or safety consulting.
• Prior experience in a senior safety, compliance, or advisory role
• Demonstrated success supporting DOT regulatory corrective
