The Roman Catholic Musician (Piano/Organ) provides traditional Roman Catholic liturgical music in support of weekly and special worship services at Fort Jackson. This role supports the free exercise of religion for Soldiers, Families, and authorized personnel by enhancing full and active participation in the Mass in accordance with U.S. Army Chaplain Corps standards and Roman Catholic liturgical norms.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Roman Catholic Musician will:
- Provide piano and organ accompaniment for weekly Sunday Roman Catholic Mass.
- Perform traditional Roman Catholic liturgical music appropriate to the liturgical calendar.
- Support all musical elements of the Mass, including:
- Preludes and postludes
- Congregational hymnody
- Choir accompaniment (as applicable)
- Offertory, Communion, and meditative music
- Participate in Mass rehearsals as scheduled.
- Provide music for special liturgical services, including Holy Days, seasonal services, memorials, and funerals.
- Coordinate professionally with the Roman Catholic Chaplain, Chaplain Staff, and Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR).
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled services and rehearsals and maintain professional conduct at all times.
Education and/or Experience
Required:
- Minimum two (2) years of experience serving as a musician in Roman Catholic worship settings.
- Demonstrated proficiency playing piano and/or organ for traditional Roman Catholic liturgy.
- Proven ability to support congregational and choir singing.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Roman Catholic Mass structure
- Liturgical seasons and calendar
- Traditional Catholic hymnody and service music
- Ability to perform independently and professionally in a military worship environment.
- Eligibility to obtain Fort Jackson installation access (background check required).
Preferred Skills:
- Formal training in sacred music, church music, or a related field.
- Experience supporting military, hospital, or institutional chaplaincy programs.
- Familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgical planning and collaboration with clergy.
Security and Compliance Requirements
Selected candidates must successfully complete:
- Installation background check for Fort Jackson access.
- AT Level I Antiterrorism Awareness Training.
- iWATCH Training.
- OPSEC Awareness Training.
(Training links and onboarding materials will be provided by VMG.)
Work Environment & Schedule
- Weekly Sunday Mass (approximately 1.5 hours per service, including arrival time).
- Additional rehearsals and special services as scheduled throughout the liturgical year.
- Schedule includes weekends and occasional holidays.
- Services are performed on-site at the Main Post Chapel, Fort Jackson.
Compensation
- Paid per service in accordance with the contract.
- No benefits (non-personal services / independent contractor role).
- Payment issued monthly for services rendered.
