Regional Driver Manager - Chemical Manufacturing Plant (Oil-&-Gas), Toronto ON
The Regional Driver Manager is responsible to lead a diverse team of 18 – 25 professional truck drivers located across 7 – 10 Company manufacturing sites. The Regional Driver Manager will also provide technical / subject matter expertise for the entire Company Private Fleet in a discipline area such as equipment/maintenance, training, safety or logistics technology (Fleet Management Systems, ELD, etc). The team of Regional Driver managers will work collaboratively to collectively provide standardization across the entire Company Private Fleet, implementing most effective practices and use of data-based metrics to drive performance improvements in safety, Private Fleet utilization (equipment and drivers) and overall cost. The Regional Driver Manager will lead drivers remotely with strong partnership and collaboration with Company manufacture plant managers. The expectation is that the Regional Driver Manager shall visit all sites on a regular frequency to drive engagement with the team. Ensure safe, compliant delivery of Company products to our customers.
The ideal candidate will have relevant work experience in the manufacturing and/or fabrication industry, combined with good interpersonal/teamwork, organizational, and communication skills, both verbally and in writing. - Minimum 10+ years’ work experience required, with 5 years in ground transportation industry preferred.
- Intermediate level Microsoft Office expertise required.
- 3+ years of previous supervisory experience in Transportation or Chemical industry or Bulk liquids.
- Must possess a valid passport
- Must have flexibility to work inside and outside (office setting and field setting)
- Has a collaborative work ethic
- Experience in Supervising within a Unionized environment is an asset.
- Valid or previously held CDL is an asset.
- Able to meet a minimum of 50% travel that is required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performance Management of Team - 20%
- Establishes private fleet performance goals and communicate throughout driver pool. Both high level and individual level metrics
- Creates recognition/incentive program around meeting or exceeding individual level metrics
- Conducts quarterly and annual performance management meetings with drivers
- Daily management of personal issues – vacation/time off requests, providing coaching, managing issues (personnel issues, equipment issues, etc)
- Works in partnership with manufacturing plant managers as required
- Central point of contact for drivers and local dispatch
- Creates a positive work environment continually supporting and recognizing employees for professional and personal growth
EH&S - 20%
- Works collaboratively with Tech Services for NOV/incident investigation to identify root causes and implement actions to prevent recurrence
- Customer complaint/NCR investigations to identify root causes and implement actions to prevent recurrence
- Regularly reviews ELD data to proactively identify areas needing improvement prior to becoming an NOV/incident. Ensures Hours of Service compliance
- Understands DOT Safer / Basics data to identify actions to improve
- Establishes Company wide (PF site wide) LFI/Flash reports and shares
- Establishes EH&S audit process/checklist
- Conducts EH&S audits at plants
- Establishes education program for drivers around DOT Safer/Basics metrics
- Implements high visibility tracking for key performance metrics at plant level
- Utilizes MOC as required to ensure proper reviews/approvals
- Establishes and implements driver safety training/topics - weekly and monthly
Hire & Onboard - 10%
- Submits hiring requisitions, conducts candidate screening - chooses who to interview
- Interviews candidates. Evaluates candidates (coordinate driver test/inspection process/etc)
- Selects and offers job to successful candidate
- For any medical issues that could impact safe operation of the vehicle, ensures driver is re-evaluated/fit for duty
- License status, endorsements, annual physical, annual MVR, annual review, annual query, maintain hazmat training & endorsement. Ensure TWIC, as needed
- Submittals of initial IT request for onboarding new employee. Complete onboarding checklist activities (Company generic stuff, set up in LMS, etc)
Fleet Maintenance - 10%
- Provides input into maintenance strategy - both PM and reactive maintenance
- Establishes approved maintenance shop list and ensures set up as a vendor
- Conducts maintenance shop audits
- Ensures standardized maintenance approach and record keeping
- Ensures all mandatory DOT inspections are completed on time (VIPK, etc)
- Establishes out of service metrics for trucks and trailers
- Establishes recommended critical spare part list and maintain inventory
- Owns asset inspection platform (WhipAround) (pre-post trip inspections)
- Ensures all equipment maintenance records maintained appropriately (currently Comply with DOT)
- Creates work orders in WhipAround for maintenance events
- Gets estimate from the shop for work to be done, gets POs, approve invoices
Training - 10%
- Contributes to driver training program including driver training manual
- Assigns training requirements to drivers in JJ Keller
- Monitors training compliance
- Creates and maintains Company-wide Fleet procedures.
- Completes driver training manual / driver specific onboarding.
- Establishes Emergency Response training for drivers (put into driver training book as relevant)
- Program to ensure commercial driver license, endorsements, certifications are maintained and record keeping as needed.
- Refreshes training materials as needed and for DOT/TC changes.
Cost – 10%
- Owns cost centers related to private fleet - equipment, drivers, maintenance, fuel, etc
- Budgeting, monitoring cost, looking for opportunities to reduce cost, ensure cost are appropriately aligned
- Expense report management (approvals)
- Geotab hours of service and PTO tracking to ADP payroll activities
- PTO approval and tracking
Environmental, Health & Safety Responsibilities:
- Leads a driver-centric Joint Health and Safety Committee
- Maintains equipment and driver compliance records
- Utilizes telematics data to coach, manages and documents driver OTR behavior
- Oversees and investigates truck accidents/incidents and prepares accident/incident reports. Ensures corrective action is taken.
- Coordinates driver training
- Identifies opportunities and makes recommendations to improve company's driver training program
- Ensures drivers possess and don all required PPE
- Assists with State and Federal Regulatory inspections

- Must be physically capable of spending long hours sitting in an office environment.
- Must be “fit for duty”.
