The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of construction site operations, providing strong field leadership while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and schedule performance.

Key Responsibilities

Site Operations and Execution

  • Direct and coordinate all on-site construction activities from mobilization through substantial completion, ensuring work is executed in accordance with contract documents, applicable codes, and project specifications.
  • Develop, maintain, and update the site construction schedule in collaboration with the Project Manager, and hold subcontractors accountable to milestone dates and sequencing requirements.
  • Oversee site logistics, laydown areas, crane picks, material deliveries, and temporary works to maintain an organized and productive site environment.
  • Conduct daily site walks to monitor progress, identify deficiencies, and resolve field conflicts before they impact schedule or quality.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and shop drawings to anticipate constructability issues and coordinate solutions with the project team.
  • Manage project closeout activities including deficiency walkthroughs, commissioning support, and handover coordination.

Health, Safety, and Environment

  • Champion a safety-first culture on site, ensuring full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, company safety programs, and project-specific safety plans.
  • Conduct and document daily toolbox talks, site inspections, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Enforce site access controls, PPE requirements, and safe work procedures for all workers, subcontractors, and visitors.
  • Liaise with Ministry of Labour inspectors and respond to any compliance orders in a timely and professional manner.

Subcontractor and Trade Coordination

  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of all subcontractors and trades on site, ensuring activities are properly sequenced and conflicts are resolved efficiently.
  • Participate in subcontractor pre-construction meetings to align on scope, safety expectations, and site rules.
  • Monitor subcontractor manpower levels and productivity, escalating concerns to the Project Manager when required.
  • Review and verify subcontractor daily reports, progress claims, and site instructions.

Quality Control

  • Implement and enforce the project quality control plan, conducting inspections at critical milestones and holding subcontractors to defined standards.
  • Identify and track deficiencies throughout construction, ensuring timely resolution prior to occupancy.
  • Coordinate third-party inspections, testing, and commissioning activities with consultants and authorities having jurisdiction.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain detailed daily site reports documenting weather conditions, manpower counts, site activities, visitors, and any notable events or incidents.
  • Track and document site directives, RFI responses, and field changes, ensuring the project record remains current and accurate.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly project meetings, providing clear and accurate field updates to the project team and client representatives.

Stakeholder and Client Relations

  • Maintain a professional and collaborative relationship with the client's site representative, consultants, and building management where applicable.
  • Communicate proactively with neighbours, building occupants, and other affected parties to manage site impact in occupied or sensitive environments.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of progressive field experience in the construction industry, with a demonstrated track record supervising commercial, institutional, or renovation projects in an urban environment.
  • Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline is an asset; Gold Seal Certification (GSC) is strongly preferred.
  • Deep working knowledge of OHSA requirements, construction regulations, and the Ontario Building Code.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple trades simultaneously on fast-track or occupied-building projects.
  • Strong reading and interpretation skills for construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents including CCDC forms.
  • Proficiency in Procore or equivalent construction management software, as well as standard scheduling tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead by example and maintain composure in high-pressure environments.
