Key Job Responsibilities:

 

The Program Developer position is generally intended for a  program coder with some program development experience. 

 

The Program Developer  is skilled in the use of a limited number of online and batch programming languages and tools and generally acts as a team resource on components of systems being managed by a Systems Developer or Systems Engineer.  

 

The incumbant assures that the software programs and associated tasks to which he/she is assigned are developed, tested and completed according to departmental standards and defined client requirements.

 

Key Job Requirements:

 

·       University Degree in Computer Science or a Community College Certificate in Computer Science or equivalent experience

·       At least 2 years of programming experience

·       Requires a basic level of coding, technical and time management skills along with effective communication skills

·       Has interpersonal skills to deal effectively with other IS staff in team situations

·       Must be able to develop smaller units of application code in either the online or batch environment

·       Must be able to deal with technical support resources

·       Must develop knowledge of technical options

·       Must be able to perform full unit testing on all programs developed

·       Must learn and utilize available automated testing tools and utilities

·       Must be able to produce required documentation for all programs created or changed

·       Must be able to participate in resolving basic day to day production application problems

·       Must be flexible, open minded and an effective communicator in all inter-personal dealings

 

Specific Accountability:

 

·       Designs and codes modules of logic, with guidance in the application of data base access methods

·       Under the direction and close supervision of a Systems Engineer or the Supervisor, may be assigned to interact with internal clients

·       Development tasks will include online and batch applications in one or more programming environments such as Powerbuilder, C++ etc. for smaller units of application code

·       Performs required unit testing to ensure that all software is working correctly and delivers the desired result

·       Applies appropriate tools and methods to provide documentation at both the program and logic level

·       Creates online user help facilities where directed

·       Where assigned, develops or makes revisions to small application components

·       Assures that all applications are developed with the highest  quality and adhere to departmental standards for logic coding, version control and library management by requesting and participating in peer review sessions of his/her own and other Developers efforts

·       On occasion, may participate with Systems Developers in the review of internal standards for code structure, language use, version control and code library management.

·       Provides resource estimates for basic components of the software development process in support of project planning and scheduling tasks

·       Acts as an on-going resource to other Developers and may participate in resolving basic day to day production application problems

·       Deals with technical support resources in the course of most assignments.
