Product Development Engineer- MV Distribution

Locations: Nashville, TN; Jacksonville, FL; Portland, OR

Position Overview

  • Support the design, testing, certification, and development of new electrical power distribution products.
  • Work with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, sales, and product teams to move concepts through prototype, validation, and production release.
  • Apply mechanical engineering fundamentals, along with electrical and thermal considerations, to develop reliable and manufacturable product designs.
  • Manage assigned product development tasks with limited direction while ensuring quality, accuracy, and alignment with project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute engineering activities for New Product Introduction projects.
  • Support product development from concept design through testing, certification, and release.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, lead engineers, sales, and other stakeholders to define product requirements and engineering specifications.
  • Create concept drawings, detailed designs, 3D models, 2D drawings, and bills of material for prototypes and test units.
  • Coordinate with NRTLs, including UL, CSA, and similar agencies, to support product evaluation and certification.
  • Develop and document test plans based on applicable standards and project requirements.
  • Support in-house and third-party testing, including temperature rise, dielectric/BIL, short-circuit, withstand current, mechanical endurance, environmental, functional, and seismic testing.
  • Review test results and revise designs based on data, engineering analysis, and product requirements.
  • Evaluate electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance through testing, simulation, or analytical methods.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to apply Design for Manufacturability principles.
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers to support accurate, production-ready design documentation.
  • Conduct failure analysis on existing products and identify opportunities for product improvement.
  • Travel up to 20% as needed to support testing, certification, manufacturing coordination, and product development activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing low or medium voltage power distribution equipment, electrical equipment, or related products.
  • Experience with NRTL evaluation, testing, and certification processes, including UL, CSA, or similar agencies.
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment standards such as UL 891, UL 1558, UL 508A, IEEE C37.20, or similar standards.
  • Experience creating 3D models, 2D drawings, and bills of material.
  • SolidWorks experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design, manufacturability, and product development practices.
  • Ability to interpret test results, troubleshoot design issues, and recommend practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong analytical, communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage tasks independently in a fast-paced product development environment.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% as needed.
