Process Manager

The Process Manager is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Toledo HBI Operating department through development, monitoring, and acting upon performance indicators with relation to safety, environment, quality, personnel, and operation processes. This role is responsible for maintaining, forecasting, and achieving plant production targets which are aligned with business needs, while ensuring the plant is kept at a level consistent with internal and external regulatory requirements. The role ensures that Operators and Operating Supervisors are trained and capable of carrying out operational tasks from the oxide storage pile through the reduction furnace, to HBI load out including ancillary service operations.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Lead and promote IronUnits health, safety, and environment policies and procedures
- Participate in safety audits and observations to demonstrate visible safety leadership
- Monitor safety and environmental performance and take action on areas that require change
- Ensure process changes in equipment and/or operating parameters are appropriately analyzed and proceed through the management of change process
- Align and cascade business strategy to tangible operational drivers promoting action to optimize
- Maintain plant forecasts for production within a twelve to eighteen-month timeframe
- In combination with peers and manager, prepare inputs to budget and forecast models
- Communicate the business plan to the Processing workforce
- Develop and monitor key performance indicators on a continuous basis in order to gauge process efficiency, product quality, and cost effectiveness
- Identify deviations from plan and assign tasks appropriately to correct or minimize impact
- Monitor progress of tasks associated with deviations and take action to achieve target completion dates
- Monitor and communicate buffer capacity and shortfalls in feed stock and final product with relation to logistics
- Using delay data, identify opportunities for improvement in the facility
- Review and provide processing input for authorization of work that impacts production for the five week maintenance planning cycle
- Provide leadership to team of direct reports, so they are clear about their role purpose, level of work, and task assignments
- Establish high performance standards and set goals to attain them
- Develop and maintain scorecards for operational personnel
- Coach personnel on increased performance on a day to day basis to deliver results consistent with the operational and maintenance plans
- Provide support and positive reinforcement to personnel when behaviors align with operational goals within the limits set by the organization
- Ensure that all Operations Crews are operating equipment correctly and consistently
- Review and ensure daily standard work functions are being performed by team
- Monitor team performance and provide appropriate and timely feedback
- Ensure team behavior is aligned and accountable to the employee performance policy
- Develop and foster relationships with key service providers in safety, environmental, maintenance, and commercial to ensure wider business goals are met
- Seek and justify capital expenditure to improve plant processes


- Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, Minerals Processing or equivalent
- 10+ years experience in heavy industrial environment preferably steel, hydrocarbon, or mining environment
- Experience overseeing, leading, and coaching a large group of people
- Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) experience; Ellipse preferred
- Microsoft Office experience (Excel, Word, etc.)
- Project Management Software (MS Project, Primavera, etc.)
- Knowledge and experience with business improvement tools such as 6 sigma, RCA and statistical process control
- Knowledge and experience with ISO processes (9001, 14001, 45001)


- Effectively communicate both orally and through written text
- Ability to read and constructively influence personnel in team processes
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and effectively manage multiple/changing priorities
- Ability to read and understand technical documents including PFD’s, P&ID’s and O&M manuals
- Ability to read and understand regulatory documents including API, ASME standards

Physical Demands:

- Can be sedentary for long periods of time
- Occasionally lifting up to 25lbs
- Mobility required. Must be able to handle stairs and long periods of work on your feet
- Routinely exposed to plant environment including noise, dust, dirt and vibrations, extreme climate changes / changes in weather
