The Principal Infrastructure Architect will partner closely with Architecture, Engineering, Security, Product, Infrastructure, and managed service providers to assess the current environment, define future-state architecture, and develop practical roadmaps for modernization.

We are looking for an architect who can see the big picture without losing sight of technical realities. The right candidate will bring deep infrastructure expertise, strong architectural leadership, and the ability to turn strategy into scalable, secure, resilient, and cost-effective solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Define and drive the enterprise infrastructure architecture strategy, including current-state assessments, future-state architecture, and modernization roadmaps.
  • Develop infrastructure architecture standards, reference architectures, governance models, and technical principles across enterprise environments.
  • Lead modernization initiatives spanning cloud adoption, hybrid infrastructure, automation, platform simplification, and infrastructure transformation.
  • Architect scalable and resilient solutions across cloud, networking, compute, storage, security, and data center environments.
  • Partner with internal architecture and engineering teams as well as managed service providers to align technical roadmaps and execution with business objectives.
  • Provide architectural oversight for major infrastructure investments and technology decisions, balancing scalability, reliability, security, cost, risk, and business value.
  • Establish and mature architecture governance and operating models to improve consistency across complex infrastructure environments.
  • Advance observability, reliability, performance engineering, service health, and operational resiliency practices.
  • Drive improvements in disaster recovery, business continuity, infrastructure resiliency, and operational readiness.
  • Identify opportunities to use automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), AIOps, AI-enabled technologies, and intelligent automation to improve infrastructure operations and service delivery.
  • Support cloud and infrastructure cost optimization efforts, including the application of FinOps principles where appropriate.
  • Evaluate legacy infrastructure and develop practical modernization strategies that balance transformation goals with operational and business requirements.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor and change leader, influencing senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams toward modern, integrated infrastructure practices.

What We're Looking For

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive experience across enterprise infrastructure, infrastructure architecture, cloud architecture, or related technical leadership roles.
  • Significant experience designing and leading enterprise-scale infrastructure architecture across complex environments.
  • Broad technical expertise across infrastructure domains including:
    • Public cloud
    • Hybrid cloud
    • Networking
    • Compute
    • Storage
    • Security
    • Data center infrastructure
    • Infrastructure operations
  • Proven experience leading infrastructure modernization initiatives involving cloud adoption, automation, platform simplification, or infrastructure transformation.
  • Experience developing and executing architecture roadmaps, standards, reference architectures, and future-state strategies.
  • Strong understanding of AWS, Microsoft Azure, and/or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and their role within hybrid enterprise environments.
  • Experience designing infrastructure for scalability, resiliency, availability, security, and cost optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of disaster recovery and business continuity architecture.
  • Experience improving infrastructure observability, reliability, service health, and performance.
  • Hands-on knowledge of automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts and technologies.
  • Experience collaborating across Architecture, Engineering, Infrastructure, Security, and other enterprise technology organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence major technology decisions, investments, standards, and strategic priorities.
  • Experience working within regulated environments where security, compliance, resiliency, and operational controls are critical.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into recommendations for both technical and executive stakeholders.

Candidates will be especially well aligned if they bring experience with several of the following:

  • Enterprise hybrid-cloud architecture and modernization
  • Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, or comparable IaC/automation technologies
  • Infrastructure orchestration and configuration management
  • Observability and monitoring platforms
  • Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, SLOs, and service-health practices
  • AIOps and intelligent infrastructure automation
  • Cloud cost optimization and FinOps
  • IT Service Management (ITSM) and infrastructure operational maturity
  • Managed service provider (MSP) governance and technical oversight
  • Security and regulatory frameworks
  • Large-scale disaster recovery and business continuity programs
  • Modernization of legacy data center and infrastructure environments
  • Healthcare or other highly regulated enterprise environments

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Cloud certification or equivalent demonstrated expertise with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Continued professional development in areas such as cloud architecture, automation, security, observability, infrastructure engineering, and emerging technologies is highly valued.

What Success Looks Like

The successful Principal Infrastructure Architect will be able to evaluate a complex existing environment, identify where architecture and operational practices need to evolve, and create a realistic path toward a more modern, automated, resilient, scalable, and cost-effective infrastructure ecosystem.

This position requires more than designing individual solutions. You'll help establish the architectural direction that guides infrastructure decisions across the organization while working with engineering teams and technology partners to turn that direction into measurable improvements.

Additional Details

This is a remote, home-office-based position supporting Novacoast's client. Occasional travel of up to 20% may be required for meetings and other business needs.

Due to the nature of enterprise infrastructure operations, occasional evening or weekend availability may be required during significant outages, security incidents, deployments, or scheduled maintenance activities.
