Job Description

Principal Geotechnical Engineer (Practice Leader)

Sequence was just exclusively retained and are currently seeking a capable Geotechnical Engineer to serve as a Senior Principal here in Northern California.

This role is currently the industry's most high-profile position of its like in California.

Our client, one of the most respected geotechnical firms in northern California, is the go-to organization for high-end residential projects and developments. Their clientele ranges from the who's who of Silicon Valley Tech to movers and shakers of San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey to some of the most established developers of the region.

The role is a desirable one, and our client has a solid/stable operation and reputation. They also function with niche clientele that make them a bit removed from the fallout of the Coronavirus (clients are continuing to undertake their high-end projects through this time, and the firm has a significant backlog of work).

Their focus is on providing innovative and state-of-the-art design and construction services employing their extensive experience with the soil, rock, and groundwater conditions of the San Francisco Bay area. The extensive geotechnical experience and expertise of engineers and geologists within the ranks enables them to effectively assess the construction and long-term performance risks associated with subsurface conditions involved in a wide range of projects. The firm participates as a vital member of the project team with clientele, focusing on project objectives and using innovative technologies to provide practical design recommendations and superior service.

Core services include:

  • Subsurface Investigations
  • Foundation Analysis and Design Criteria
  • In-situ Testing and Performance Monitoring
  • Slope Stability Analysis
  • Comprehensive Laboratory Testing
  • Dynamic Analysis and Evaluation
  • Soil Stabilization and Ground Improvements
  • Groundwater Assessment
  • Pavement Design and Subgrade Evaluation
  • Liquefaction Mitigation
  • Expansive Soil and Bedrock Mitigation
  • Settlement Analysis
  • Site Mapping and Drafting

A 30-year-old organization, the operation is profitable and extremely well run. The company has worked hard to build internal systems, processes, and procedures that allow it to carry out and execute a volume of quality work.

While the organization has several reputable and respected engineers in its ranks, leadership would like to bring into the fold a talented and dynamic Geotechnical Engineer to join the operation. Initially, this would be in a Principal capacity with the opportunity to progress up into CEO leadership and potential ownership interest.

The focus of the role is more on leadership and development of personnel and promotion of technical excellence. While operations aspects come into play, the company infrastructure is refined. What is vital to them is finding a leader that can encompass the spirit of the organization's mission and work with personnel as the corporate voice within the operation.

This position complements the knowledge and skill set of the overall executive leadership team, specifically adding extensive geotechnical and engineering abilities and management efforts. It is more of a corporate leadership role (a great deal of flexibility) with client interaction, but does get project engagement time for technical work.

While the firm has a commercial, civil, and institutional practice, its primary focus by choice has been more on high-end residential activities. This in mind, the organization is happy to entertain bringing on an individual from another geotechnical market focus. Key to them is finding the right type of leadership presence and less on technical leaning.

This could be the perfect role for a more experienced professional seeking to find a long-term home in a more intimate, stable, and growing organization. It could also possibly be an opportunity for a talented and dynamic mid-level professional seeking to gain extensive experience and step up into a challenging role where they could essentially make it their own.

The company has a corporate culture that values individuals as resources. They have loyal employees, many of who have been with the organization for many years. They have watched it grown from a fledgling operation and have pride in the operation.

The organization contributes this success to the high level of engagement of their employees and critical leadership. Company policy is to solicit – and expect – input from each of its employees. They foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and encourage the free exchange of ideas in order to remain a vibrant, thriving place to work. Leadership believes that this unique culture has resulted in the company having some of the industry's most engaged employees.

This same philosophy and investment in personnel carry over to benefits carries over to benefits as well as rewards for hard work. The company pays well, has performance bonuses, and offers a benefits package including 401k, health care, dental/vision, life insurance and time off, etc. Relocation assistance would also be available to the right individual. Essentially, anything within reason can be structured.

The position is slated to be based here in Silicon Valley, California, with occasional regional travel to branch office facilities or to visit clientele.
