Basic Purpose and Objective
Seeking a skilled Plant Quality Engineer to join our dynamic team at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Sterling Heights, Michigan. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring the highest standards of product quality for automotive components, supporting production lines that supply major OEMs such as General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement, reduce defects, and maintain compliance with industry standards like IATF 16949. The ideal candidate is a problem-solver with hands-on experience in automotive manufacturing, passionate about quality excellence in a fast-paced environment.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor and analyze production processes to identify quality issues, using statistical methods and root cause analysis tools (e.g., 8D, Fishbone, Pareto).
- Lead Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities, including Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and Control Plans for new product launches.
- Conduct internal audits and support supplier quality audits to ensure adherence to ISO/IATF 16949 standards and customer-specific requirements (CSRs).
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and suppliers to implement corrective actions and preventive measures (CAPA) for non-conformances.
- Perform capability studies (Cp/Cpk), gage R&R, and measurement system analysis (MSA) to validate processes and equipment.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Six Sigma methodologies (e.g., DMAIC projects) to reduce scrap, rework, and warranty claims.
- Prepare and present quality reports, including PPAP submissions, to customers and management.
- Support safety and environmental compliance in alignment with plant operations in Sterling Heights.
- Train production staff on quality standards and procedures to foster a culture of quality ownership.
Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in quality engineering within the automotive industry, preferably in a Tier 1 or OEM supplier environment.
- Strong knowledge of automotive core tools: APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, and SPC.
- Certification in ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt, or equivalent is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in quality management software (e.g., Minitab, QI Macros) and ERP systems (e.g., SAP or similar).
- Excellent problem-solving skills with experience in root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
- Familiarity with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and AIAG standards.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing plant setting, including occasional travel to suppliers or customer sites (up to 10%).
- Analytical mindset with strong attention to detail and data-driven decision-making.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and customers.
- Ability to thrive in a high-volume production environment with tight deadlines.
- Leadership potential to mentor junior staff and lead quality projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
