Planning & Reserves Engineer

Position Summary

Our client is seeking a highly motivated Reserves Engineer to support the company’s Planning & Reserves function, reporting directly to the VP of Planning & Reserves. This role will play a critical part in maintaining the integrity of the company’s reserves, forecasting, and long-range development planning processes across the company’s asset base.

The ideal candidate is a technically strong and highly organized engineer who can operate independently, manage large datasets and forecasting workflows, and contribute meaningfully to cross-functional business planning discussions. This role requires an individual who understands how reserves, forecasting, operations, development planning, and financial considerations intersect to drive enterprise decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain and support the company’s reserves and planning databases, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and auditability

- Prepare and maintain PDP, PUD, probable, and possible reserve forecasts, corporate production forecasts, and long-range development forecasts

- Develop, update, and maintain LOE (Lease Operating Expense) models within the reserves database to support forecasting and economic evaluations

- Maintain and track development inventory, including inventory ranking, development timing, and progression of locations through the planning lifecycle

- Support annual and mid-year reserve processes, including coordination with third-party reserve engineers and internal functional groups

- Perform decline curve analysis, forecasting, and economic modeling to support reserve bookings, development planning, and capital allocation decisions

- Support annual budgeting, long-range planning, and forecast reconciliation processes across the asset base

- Perform forecast-to-actual performance analysis to improve forecasting accuracy and reserve confidence

- Conduct scenario modeling and sensitivity analysis in conjunction with FP&A team to support strategic planning and capital allocation decisions

- Maintain and improve reserves workflows, forecasting methodologies, and data quality processes

- Partner cross-functionally with Reservoir Engineering, Geoscience, Drilling & Completions, Production Operations, Accounting & Finance, and Commercial / Marketing teams

- Assist with preparation of materials for bank presentations, investor materials, and internal management reporting

- Identify inefficiencies within planning and reserves workflows and proactively recommend improvements

- Support integrity and consistency of planning and reserves data across evolving business systems and data platforms

- Support ongoing data warehouse and systems integration initiatives related to planning and reserves data

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering or related engineering discipline

- Approximately 5–10+ years of industry experience, preferably within the Permian Basin

- Strong working knowledge of ARIES, PHDwin, Microsoft Access, and Excel

- Experience with reserve forecasting and bookings, decline curve analysis, economic modeling, and long-range planning

- Familiarity with SEC reserve reporting processes preferred

- Experience supporting both Midland Basin and Delaware Basin assets preferred

- Experience with data management, systems integration, or analytics tools is beneficial
