A global steel and mining company who is the leading supplier of quality steel products in all major markets is looking for a Mechanical Maintenance Planner in their Coke Ovens Division.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for the performance and reliability of coke ovens equipment. The primary function of this job is to continuously improve equipment reliability through best maintenance practices while ultimately reducing overall repair and maintenance expense.
  • Physically must be able to access all areas of the coke ovens' processes. The position requires office and plant work and all other duties/responsibilities as may be required.
  • Must communicate with suppliers, logistic personnel, and hourly workforce.
  • Evaluate present Coke Ovens equipment reliability performance.
  • Implement continuous improvement projects aimed at improved reliability.
  • Engineer new equipment & system installations aimed at incremental production improvements.
  • Develop and implement maintenance practice improvements to improve reliability
  • Update equipment drawings in the electronic drawing management system.
  • Maintain equipment history; maintain, document and track PM programs; and troubleshoot equipment failures
  • Stay abreast of the latest coke producing technologies.
  • Monitor/control costs to achieve business plan goals.
  • Supervise the mechanical maintenance and repair in the coke ovens area.
  • Ensure workforce safety.
  • Provide leadership in maintenance project activities.
  • Implement mechanical maintenance practices and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Maintain complete maintenance history for mechanical equipment.
  • Resolve major mechanical problems within the department.
  • Plan repair work on downturns.
  • Meet with vendors to discuss equipment application and problems.
  • Discuss with Engineering personnel new or revised equipment design and/or arrangement. Initiate work orders, purchase requisitions and repair and miscellaneous expense requisitions. Supervise inventory of mechanical spare parts. Instructs employees in proper work practices and procedures.
  • Assure compliance with OSHA, IDEM and EPA requirements.
  • Participate in identifying opportunities to derive additional business value from the application of the equipment reliability process and best practices
  • Provide leadership and mentor others in deploying and maintaining the systems and methodologies ensuring equipment reliability
  • Facilitate the application of a risk based approach to prioritizing equipment reliability issues
  • Facilitate Root Cause Failure Analysis, Reliability-centered Maintenance, Maintenance Task Analysis, etc. enabling the development of technically based Equipment Maintenance Programs incorporating facility control standards driven by product characteristics, equipment life expectations, serviceability and cost
  • Facilitate the application of a risk based approach to prioritizing equipment reliability issues.
  • Conduct detailed technical investigations supporting continuous incremental improvement of equipment reliability (Efficiency and Effectiveness)
  • Participate in and coordinate resolution of complex equipment reliability technical problems involving multiple technical inputs (internal and external).
  • Project manage activities aimed at continuous incremental improvement of Equipment Reliability
  • Provide technical input into Improvement and Capital Projects.
  • Proactively contribute recommendations to the long-term planning of manufacturing facilities and processes based on a thorough understanding of current performance and future requirements

Minimum/Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years heavy industrial experience or technical college degree
  • Must have the ability to work well with others and communicate effectively
  • In-depth Knowledge of best maintenance practices
  • Experienced with industrial mechanical and power transmission equipment
  • Basic knowledge of industrial hydraulics
  • Must be able to work in a multi-level organization which operates 24/7

Preferred Requirements:

  • In depth knowledge of the Coke making process
  • A successful track record of project management and team building
  • Expert in hydraulic, pneumatics and environmental controls
