Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy medical system.  Over 4,300 Sailors and civilians work in locations from Yorktown to Chesapeake to deliver health care to the 420,000 active duty members, family members and retirees living in Hampton Roads.

Position Overview

The contract physician participates as a medical expert and advisor on the Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) consulting with and advising other healthcare professionals.  The MEB compiles and reviews all medical documentation and forwards it to the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV). The SECNAV sends it to the Physical Evaluation Board for review and approval. The contract physician will not perform any voting or chairing functions relating to the Medical Evaluation Board (MEB). Duties include:

  • Provide a full range of medical duties covering diagnosis, disability, and processing/determination.
  • Review patient consults and conduct medical record reviews along with providing physical examinations to provide input to the Department Head regarding fitness for duty determinations, appropriateness of physical readiness waivers, and determinations of suitability for isolated, remote, overseas or operational assignment for all referred Active Duty, Reserve and Medically Retired personnel on the Temporary Disability Retire List (TDRL).
  • Clinically assess patients and review medical records to determine the medical need for further clinical evaluation.

Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. and successful completion of postgraduate training.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted medical license in at least 1 state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • At least 3 years of experience within the last 5 years in any of the following specialties: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or Occupational Medicine.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine / American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, the American Board of Internal Medicine / American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation / American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or the American Board of Preventative Medicine in Occupational Medicine.
  • Must have a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This is a contract position working at a military facility. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time clinic hours are Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Shifts will typically be scheduled for 8.5 hours. At the contractor's and the Government's mutual agreement, alternative schedules, such as a compressed work schedule, may be implemented.
