VMG is seeking an experienced Senior Pediatric Oncology and Arts in Health Subject Matter Expert (SME) Advisor for a proposed National Endowment for the Arts project examining the benefits, applications, and use of the arts in pediatric cancer care. This part-time consulting position will provide senior-level scientific, clinical, and/or arts-in-health expertise throughout the research, stakeholder engagement, national convening, and Toolkit development phases of the project.

The ideal candidate will bring expertise at the intersection of pediatric oncology/hematology and creative arts therapies or arts in health. VMG will also consider exceptional candidates with deep expertise in one of these areas and demonstrated experience collaborating across the other. Depending on project needs and available expertise, complementary SME advisors may be engaged to ensure appropriate representation across pediatric oncology and arts-in-health disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide senior subject matter expertise related to pediatric oncology/hematology, creative arts therapies, arts in health, and/or arts-based interventions for children and adolescents with cancer.
• Advise project leadership on the scientific, clinical, psychosocial, and arts-in-health framing of the project.
• Support the development and refinement of research questions, terminology, definitions, and conceptual approaches.
• Identify relevant peer-reviewed research, evidence-based practices, promising programs, models, interventions, and other resources related to arts and pediatric cancer care.
• Recommend researchers, clinicians, practitioners, creative arts therapists, patient and family representatives, and other subject matter experts for potential engagement in the project.
• Review and interpret available evidence regarding the benefits, applications, limitations, and implementation of arts-based approaches in pediatric oncology settings.
• Provide context regarding the needs and experiences of children and adolescents with cancer and their families as relevant to the project's research and stakeholder engagement activities.
• Advise on the appropriate interpretation and communication of scientific, clinical, psychosocial, and arts-in-health evidence.
• Support development of content and discussion topics for a national convening focused on arts and pediatric cancer care.
• Review proposed convening agendas, session topics, discussion questions, and supporting materials for scientific and contextual relevance.
• Participate in selected planning meetings, technical discussions, stakeholder consultations, or convening activities as requested.
• Help identify important evidence gaps, implementation considerations, emerging practices, and opportunities for future research or collaboration.
• Review research summaries, findings, and other project deliverables for scientific and technical accuracy.
• Provide scientific and contextual review of a national Toolkit designed to translate project findings and stakeholder input into useful information for relevant audiences.
• Review Toolkit terminology, recommendations, examples, and supporting content to ensure they appropriately reflect available evidence and current practice.
• Collaborate with project researchers, evaluators, facilitators, arts-in-health professionals, clinicians, and other stakeholders throughout the project.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree or equivalent professional credential appropriate to the candidate's area of expertise, such as an M.D., D.O., Ph.D., Psy.D., D.M.T., M.M.T., M.A., M.S., M.P.H., or other relevant clinical, research, or creative arts therapy credential.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in pediatric oncology/hematology, creative arts therapies, arts in health, psychosocial oncology, pediatric cancer research, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated subject matter expertise in pediatric oncology/hematology and/or creative arts therapies or arts in health.
• Candidates with primary expertise in one domain must demonstrate meaningful experience collaborating or working across the complementary domain.
• Experience interpreting scientific, clinical, or practice-based evidence and communicating findings to multidisciplinary audiences.
• Experience contributing to research, clinical programs, evidence reviews, program development, or professional initiatives involving children and adolescents with cancer and/or arts-based health interventions.
• Strong analytical, critical review, and synthesis skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise specifically at the intersection of pediatric oncology/hematology and creative arts therapies or arts in health.
• Clinical or research experience in pediatric oncology or hematology.
• Professional experience as a music therapist, art therapist, dance/movement therapist, drama therapist, or other credentialed creative arts therapist working with pediatric oncology populations.
• Experience as an arts-in-health researcher, practitioner, or program leader.
• Experience in psychosocial oncology or supportive care for children and adolescents with cancer.
• Research experience examining arts-based interventions or creative arts therapies for pediatric cancer populations.
• Experience conducting or contributing to literature reviews, evidence syntheses, research studies, or evaluation projects.
• Experience advising federal agencies, national organizations, healthcare systems, academic institutions, or other multidisciplinary initiatives.
• Experience contributing to national convenings, consensus-building initiatives, clinical or practice guidance, toolkits, or other field-building resources.
• Peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or recognized professional leadership relevant to pediatric oncology, creative arts therapies, or arts in health.

Work Environment

• Part-time consulting position supporting a proposed national arts and health initiative.
• Work will primarily be performed remotely through virtual meetings, document review, research consultation, and technical advisory activities.
• Level of effort will vary based on project phase and technical needs.
• Work may include participation in research planning, evidence review, stakeholder identification and engagement, convening preparation, and review of project deliverables.
• Position requires collaboration with researchers, clinicians, creative arts therapists, arts-in-health practitioners, facilitators, patient and family stakeholders, and other subject matter experts.
• Participation in selected national convening activities or other project meetings may be required.
• Position is contingent upon contract award.
