Position Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Operations Manager of a leading freight solution provider with a portfolio of services to include freight forwarding (e.g., air, ocean, overland), air charters (e.g., cargo & passenger), warehousing, customs brokerage, and visibility tools.
The Operations Specialist will obtain and retain business on behalf of the organization by determining the appropriate routing and method of delivery in order to provide the service level required for maximum profit. The successful individual will maintain an understanding of customers’ needs and expectations and provide service to conform to these requirements. Acts as authorized representative in negotiating rates and establishing contractually binding shipping arrangements with airlines, pickup agents, delivery agents, and other vendors. Provides shipment pricing to customers based on existing contractual rates as well as providing spot quotes ensuring desired profit margins. Maintains up-to-the-minute status on all domestic and international shipments via online tracking tools and telephone. Obtains all relevant information and contacts international agents to ensure pre-clearance, proofs of delivery, associated charges, and customer satisfaction. Determines that all shipments have been successfully delivered to their city of destination and ultimately to their final point of destination.

Background Required:
  • Experience working for Freight Forwarder or Transportation provider
  • Knowledge of international and domestic cargo
  • Hazardous Materials and Dangerous Goods handling and declaration requirements
  • Shipment documentation (e.g., master airway bills, house airway bills, packing lists, export declarations)
  • Firm understanding of aircraft types and requirements based on cargo
  • Basic mathematics
  • Analytical mindset and sound decision making
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Travel less than 10%
  • Computer literate: Internet & Microsoft suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Education: High School degree
  • Residence: Chicago, IL or Buffalo, NY
Background Preferred (but not required):
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Shipping software exposure
  • Military shipping requirements exposure
