Operations Manager
Energy Performance Contracting & Project Operations
Location: Remote (Must reside within VA, MD, DC, area)

Our client is a nationally recognized, employee-owned leader in engineering, construction, and energy services, delivering complex design-build and performance contracting solutions across commercial, institutional, and government markets. They are seeking an experienced Operations Manager to oversee a portfolio of energy projects while leading high-performing project delivery teams responsible for successful project execution from preconstruction through completion.



Overview

This leadership role is responsible for driving operational excellence across multiple projects by overseeing project planning, financial performance, staffing, risk management, construction planning, procurement strategies, and client relationships. The Operations Manager plays a critical role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget while supporting long-term business growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational leadership for a portfolio of energy and construction projects from preconstruction through project completion.
  • Lead and manage project delivery teams, ensuring alignment on project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client expectations.
  • Oversee project financial performance, forecasting, reporting, and portfolio management.
  • Review project scopes, construction cost estimates, constructability, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure project KPIs and performance expectations are clearly defined and successfully achieved.
  • Collaborate with engineering, estimating, procurement, and construction teams throughout project execution.
  • Develop staffing plans and build high-performing project teams.
  • Lead subcontractor and vendor qualification, procurement strategies, pricing evaluations, and contract management.
  • Participate in customer meetings, project development efforts, and executive presentations.
  • Ensure construction schedules, procurement plans, and project execution strategies support successful project delivery.
  • Identify project risks and implement proactive solutions to minimize operational and financial exposure.
  • Foster strong relationships with clients, project partners, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.


Leadership & Team Collaboration
  • Lead multidisciplinary project delivery teams across engineering, estimating, procurement, and construction.
  • Mentor and develop project management personnel while promoting accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Drive collaboration across cross-functional teams to ensure consistent project execution.
  • Support strategic planning, resource allocation, and operational decision-making across the Energy Division.
  • Build strong internal and external relationships to support long-term client success.


Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10–15+ years of experience within the ESCO, MEP contracting, general contracting, or energy construction industries.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing complex project portfolios and project delivery teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEPF) systems.
  • Solid understanding of commercial building construction and design-build/design-assist project delivery.
  • Experience with construction estimating, contract negotiations, procurement, scheduling, and project financial management.
  • Thorough understanding of subcontractor management, risk mitigation, and construction planning.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and client relationship management skills.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel as needed for client meetings, site visits, and project support.


Work Environment
  • Remote position.
  • Candidates must reside within approximately a two-hour driving radius of the Virginia, MD, DC area to support occasional onsite meetings and project requirements.
  • Periodic travel required for project sites, client meetings, subcontractor coordination, and field investigations.

Work Authorization / Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Successful completion of background checks, drug screening, and professional reference checks required.
  • Positions involving driving require a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Employment sponsorship is not available.
