Position Overview

The contract Neurologist performs neurologic assessments in the outpatient setting, as inpatient consultations (ward, intensive care unit, step-down unit and occasionally recovery room), and occasionally in the emergency room. Periodically provides episodic care to clinic patients on a walk-in basis.  Manages the inpatient consult service and evaluates urgent outpatient neurological consults.  Duties include:

  • Examine patients, order, and evaluate the full range of tests, including electrophysiology, radiological, and laboratory tests, make diagnoses, and prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments.
  • Communicate with patients, referring physicians, and back to the appropriate primary care manager for management of disorders outside the specialty of Neurology.
  • Make consultations with other specialists as deemed necessary. Provide prescription renewal and telephone consultative services.
  • Provide recommendations or definitive evaluation for neurology problems in the referral region through phone consultation, telemedicine, and authorization and evaluation of air evacuation patients as appropriate.
  • Clinically direct, teach, observe, and provide clinical input to the performance evaluations of residents, interns, and medical students. Provide input to the review and critique of house staff and student(s) written evaluations of patients for whom the Neurologist is responsible. Provide clinical input to the formal mid-point and monthly counseling session and written clinical evaluation of all house staff and students who rotate on Neurology.
  • Participate in the formal teaching curriculum of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. 

Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. and successful completion of postgraduate training.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted medical license in at least 1 state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a full-time Neurologist within the last 5 years.
  • Board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
  • Must have a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This is a contract position working at a military facility. Must be a U.S. citizen. 

Work Schedule

  • Full-time clinic hours are Monday through Friday, between the hours of 6:30 AM and 6:00 PM. Shifts will normally be scheduled for an 8.5-hour period.
  • Pager on-call services are provided on a rotational basis 1 week every 5 weeks from 4:00 PM to 8:00 AM for 7 consecutive days. Typical volume is between 20 and 30 calls per week. Call-back after normal working hours only on rare occasions.
