Overview
The Mine Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the First Bauxite’s mine operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective extraction of resources. The Mine Manager will drive operational excellence, lead a high-performing team, and ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

Overview
The Mine Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the First Bauxite’s mine operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective extraction of resources. The Mine Manager will drive operational excellence, lead a high-performing team, and ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Health and safety
- Champion a safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and investigations to mitigate potential hazards and incidents.
- Drive continuous improvement in safety standards, practices, and training programs to ensure the well-being of all personnel.
- Display a high level of safety leadership to all employee’s contractors and consultants to ensure safety targets are achieved and a safe working culture is maintained.
- Ensure compliance with company occupational health and safety policies, procedures and relevant regulations.
- Ensure all personal injuries and incidents are reported and investigated.
- Actively lead and participate in safety initiatives.
Operational Excellence
- Lead, manage, and develop the mine operations team, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the open pit operations, including pit planning, drilling and blasting, haulage, and mine reclamation.
- Ensure alignment of daily, weekly, and monthly operational plans with overall business objectives and production targets.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the mine, including production planning, resource allocation, and equipment optimization.
- Develop and manage short- and long-term mine plans, ensuring optimal resource extraction while maintaining operational efficiency.
- Oversee scheduling and execution of drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling activities to meet production targets.
- Monitor and analyze performance metrics, making data-driven decisions to improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance operational efficiency.
Environment, Social and Governance
- Ensure employees, contractors, and business partner employee’s tasks are conducted in a fair, ethical and sustainable manner in the best interest of the company.
- Ensure department’s compliance with the requirement of Government of Guyana’s Agencies, environmental protection agency, GGMC, Health and Safety legislation and company occupational health and safety policies, rules, and regulations.
- Adhere to all environmental procedures to ensure good housekeeping, resource conservation, spill prevention and the appropriate disposal of wastes.
- Ensure all employees, contractors and business partner employees report all environmental incidents to their supervisor, manager, contract manager and to environmental department and implement immediate corrective actions.
- Ensure environmental risks for all tasks are assessed and mitigated.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including, maintenance, and HSE to ensure smooth operations and integration of activities.
- Engage with external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, contractors, and community groups to ensure compliance and build positive relationships.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to provide updates on performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Lead and support initiatives that drive operational improvements and enhance the sustainability and efficiency of the mining operation.
- Prepare, manage, and monitor the mine’s budget and expenditures, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to financial targets.
- Implement cost control measures and continuously seek opportunities to optimize spending and improve profitability.
- Lead, manage, and develop the mine operations team, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Perform employee performance assessments per company requirements.
- Liaise with Human Resources department to support employee engagement and wellbeing.
- Coach employees to optimize business performance.
- Conduct department orientation, training and development for new hires and ongoing training and development of experienced employees.
Required Education and Training
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Geology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- At least 8 years of experience in open pit mining, with a minimum of 4 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Proven track record of managing large-scale open pit mining operations and achieving production targets.
- In-depth knowledge of mining operations, including drill and blast, loading and hauling, and pit design.
- Strong understanding of mine planning and scheduling software (e.g., Vulcan, Surpac, MineSight).
- Excellent leadership and team management skills with a focus on developing and mentoring staff.
- Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets and controlling costs.
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, as well as external stakeholders.
- A commitment to safety and environmental stewardship with a demonstrated ability to foster a safety-first culture.
- Drivers’ license and able to pass GINMIN VOC within first rotation.
- Master’s degree in Mining Engineering or Business Administration.
- Professional certification (e.g., Professional Engineer, Mine Manager certification).
- Experience with sustainable mining practices and environmental management systems.
- Knowledge of regulatory and permitting processes in the mining industry.
- Experience working in the bauxite industry is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing challenges.
- Results-oriented with a focus on achieving production targets while maintaining safety and environmental standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
- High level of integrity, accountability, and commitment to ethical practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team and improve team safety awareness.
- Demonstrated sound proficiency in written, verbal and oral communication skills.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel applications) and software used by GINMIN for procurement and employee management (PRONTO, ZOHO)
- Excellent English language skills are required.
