Objectives
The Mine Manager’s primary responsibilities are to effectively manage the underground mine operations in in a safe manner that meets MSHA and Company requirements; operate the mine in an environmentally sound manner within the established budget; and efficiently produce limestone to meet plant production and schedule demands.
Nature and Scope
- Responsible for all operational aspects of a 1 million plus tons per year underground limestone mine including mine production, mobile equipment maintenance, quality, and technical support. Demonstrates leadership in employee safety & health, and environmental protection of the facility.
- Responsible for effective management of all Company assets and resources for best cost control.
- Responsible for preparation of annual budgets based on annual production rate, productivity improvement needs, safety and environmental needs.
- Lead the development and implementation of short term and long term mine plans, including ventilation, ground control and surveying.
- Responsible for maintaining MSHA required documentation.
- Responsible for maintaining value-focused upward and downward communication with peers and subordinates.
- Ensure that the various mine production and maintenance teams work efficiently together so meet established operational and cost control targets.
- Provide leadership and motivation for building successful production and maintenance teams. Support team members in their personal development goals and skill advancement, including training and coaching.
- Responsible for motivating employees and maintaining a positive relationship between Company and hourly employees within confines of the Collective Agreement.
- Ensure continuing efforts towards best practices and optimization of mine production, maintenance, and safety practices.
- Support and/or participate in the mine improvement groups, committees, mine rescue program, etc.
- Accomplish superior communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Be a key member of facility leadership team and work positively to contribute in a supportive and meaningful way to cross-department objectives.
Specific Accountabilities
- Promote safety and ensure that safe working conditions and practices are adhered to.
- Develop operating and capital budgets; forecast, monitor, and control cost performance monthly.
- Oversee development of an effective mine plan to support mine production requirements.
- Monitor all phases of operations for potential improvements and optimization.
- Maintain high level of synergy and cooperative support with plant operations and maintenance organizations.
- Promote efforts to optimize reliability and maintenance through technical solutions by supporting studies and implementing projects.
- Maintain good labor relations.
Qualifications
- Experienced Mine Manager with a strong and proven mining, geologic or civil background.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in Mine Engineering, Geologic Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a proven and successful manager. Underground mine experience required. Emphasis on leadership with a demonstrated track record of building successful supervisor and leadman teams, motivating employees and maintaining positive and cooperative relationships.
- Proven mine safety record and compliance with MSHA safety standards.
