Senior Design Engineer

Job Description: Design packaging machinery based on existing designs with customization as required. Upgrade existing standard designs of base machines and options, to be made in significant quantities. Take responsibility for entire projects, from concept to bills of material and assembly support. Suggest and implement improvements and cost savings in conjunction with other team members. Help to set good engineering procedures, processes, and design standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Use Solidworks to develop designs and 3D models of parts and large assemblies
  • Generate necessary technical documentation to support transfer to production. e.g., drawings, BOMs, assembly/installation instructions
  • Work closely with sales and customers to define project requirements and develop solutions
  • Sourcing new and commercial replacement parts for machinery, including electrical panel components, photo eyes, motors, drives, motion controllers, and pneumatic components
  • Participate in, and as needed, lead, design reviews
  • Design system control of motion, temperature, pneumatic and signals

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team, able to take the initiative, own full projects, and/or lead a small project team
  • Ability to interrupt your workflow to deal with a machine in the assembly and debug phase, and return to your project
  • Experience using Solidworks to design and organize machines with upwards of 1000 parts
  • Must be able to use Solidworks CAD software to design parts, assemblies and make clear engineering drawings
  • Proven ability to complete a job with extensive attention to detail, including detailed prints, bills of material, and documentation
  • Ability to design a machine, including many options as configurations
  • Ability to design machinery based on existing machines or assemblies or concepts with customization
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering and 10+ years of relevant work experience
  • A strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and mechanics is a must
  • Have a strong mechanical aptitude
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, and sheet metal fabrication
  • Knowledge of basic electrical circuits, experience with servo systems, electrical and pneumatic schematics, and 2D AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems, servos, sensors, automation, instrumentation, motion control, motor selection, encoders
  • Familiarity with cartoning/case packing/food packing
