Mechanical Design Engineer- Cooling Systems
Position Overview
This role will support the design, development, and execution of refrigeration and HVAC solutions for industrial and commercial clients. This role works closely with internal engineering, project delivery, compliance, and service teams to develop reliable, code-compliant, and efficient refrigeration systems.
The position is responsible for preparing technical drawings, design packages, equipment layouts, calculations, specifications, and related engineering documentation for refrigeration, HVAC, piping, ventilation, and control systems. The engineer will also support project estimates, proposals, field evaluations, design reviews, and coordination with project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
- Support the design, estimating, proposal development, and installation planning for industrial refrigeration, ammonia refrigeration, central refrigeration systems, commercial HVAC, split systems, and related mechanical systems.
- Assist with project coordination during early-stage design, estimating, and transition to project management.
- Review equipment submittals, technical data, and vendor documentation to confirm alignment with project requirements, design intent, and contract documents.
- Evaluate drawings, layouts, and engineering documents to verify compliance with client standards, project scope, applicable codes, and internal design practices.
- Conduct site visits and field measurements to document existing conditions and support installation planning.
- Prepare sketches, layouts, design notes, and technical documentation required to develop refrigeration and HVAC system designs.
- Work with CAD/BIM staff to create 2D and 3D drawings, models, layouts, and construction document packages for refrigeration, HVAC, piping, controls, and related systems.
- Provide direction to drafting resources for the development of design drawings, fabrication drawings, installation layouts, and record drawings.
- Develop equipment layouts, piping routes, ductwork layouts, support locations, and access clearances to reduce conflicts, improve maintainability, and support efficient installation.
- Review field markups and support the preparation of accurate as-built drawings at project completion.
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, field teams, vendors, and other stakeholders to resolve layout, design, constructability, and installation challenges.
- Perform refrigeration load calculations to determine system capacity requirements.
- Complete heat transfer, thermodynamic, and equipment sizing calculations for refrigeration equipment, piping, valves, and associated components.
- Design and size ventilation systems, including fans, ductwork, louvers, dampers, and related equipment.
- Perform relief valve sizing and related safety calculations.
- Develop P&IDs, process flow diagrams, equipment plans, specifications, and design documentation for refrigeration systems.
- Support the development, revision, and improvement of engineering standards and technical specifications for refrigeration systems, including piping, pressure vessels, compressors, evaporators, condensers, valves, instrumentation, insulation, corrosion protection, and related components.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure projects meet technical, quality, safety, and performance expectations.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations related to industrial refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, ammonia systems, HVAC, and mechanical design.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer license preferred, or willingness and ability to pursue licensure.
- Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in industrial refrigeration, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC, or related mechanical systems preferred.
- Strong technical understanding of refrigeration principles, equipment, piping systems, controls, and system operation.
- Experience with CAD, BIM, drafting, or mechanical design software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Experience preparing technical reports, project documentation, procedures, correspondence, and engineering-related written materials.
- Understanding of multidisciplinary project requirements, including mechanical, electrical, structural, and code-related considerations.
- Familiarity with construction methods, equipment installation practices, drawings, specifications, and field coordination.
- Knowledge of building systems, materials, engineering standards, safety requirements, and applicable codes.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, drafting, project management, field, vendor, and client teams.
- Comfortable working independently while also contributing in a team environment.
- Ability to visit job sites and access mechanical spaces, equipment areas, rooftops, or other field locations as needed.
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple active priorities and deadlines.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong technical aptitude, spatial awareness, and ability to visualize system layouts.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
