SYMVIONICS has an Immediate Opening for a Machinist at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA
The individual performing in this position must have the appropriate education and experience as a machinist to provide expertise and knowledge in the machining of parts to support the NASA/Ames Simulations Branch. The selected candidate must also maintain the machine shop capabilities, perform maintenance on the shop equipment, order & maintain tooling. The candidate must also provide support for mechanical inspection, servicing, installation, fabrication, assembly, modification, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs to the NASA/Ames simulators and their facilities. Always work in a safe manner. The workplace is a collaborative environment requiring support for other duties including operations of flight simulators. U.S. Citizenship Required
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Set up and operate HAAS CNC Mill.
• Program using Mastercam.
• Set up and operate manual mills & lathes.
• Operate heavy machinery and equipment, including man-lifts, forklifts, electric carts, pallet jacks, dollies, and overhead cranes
• Operate machine shop equipment to include drill presses, sheers, grinders and bandsaws.
• Read blueprints
• Inspect, service, repair, install components on simulator equipment
• Perform fabrication, assembly, modification, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of simulator equipment
• Perform adjustment and alignment of components on simulator equipment
• Remove and replace simulator components
• Use tools correctly and safely in the assembly/disassembly of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
• Perform motion checks on simulators after qualification, and assist in operation of simulator
• Perform regular preventive maintenance tasks and required periodic testing
• Assist with simulator and component refurbishment and hardware modifications
• Ensure operability, efficiency, and compliance with existing NASA and other standards
• Adhere to safety standards in all aspects of duties
• Work independently and as part of a team
• Provide ongoing technical support to customers, ensuring proper functional use of equipment and programs
• Perform housekeeping functions to maintain the simulators
• Participate in the development of unique systems and configurations to satisfy customer experimentation needs
• Diagnose and correct routine problems with simulators and systems
• Perform administrative tasks as required
• Qualify and perform duties as a simulation operator
• Complete all required training activities on schedule • Other duties as assigned.

- U.S. Citizenship Required
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a machinist.
- Candidate must have the experience and knowledge to successfully meet the requirements of the essential duties or a demonstrated aptitude to learn and successfully meet every requirement.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to determine when clarifying questions need to be asked about drawings and engineer inputs. Able to identify the correct tooling and machines required for a specific task.
Physical Demands
• Standing for long periods of time
• Physical lifting within OSHA standards
• Climbing and descending stairs and ladders
• Working in confined spaces
• Working at heights greater than 50 feet
• Employees must pass an annual physical exam
• Employees must use required personal protective equipment, to include safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes, fall protection harness and respirators when needed
Work Environment
Regular exposure to a fabrication shop environment with extended periods of time spent operating shop equipment or sitting at a desk using a computer.
