The client is a top financial institution with significant North American holdings. They have operations across most major verticals, including institutional & corporate, wealth management, private client, commercial banking, treasury, and retail banking.

Position Overview:

The Loan Review Officer performs independent monitoring and assessment of the lending functions of the Bank, across 6 Branches in the GTA. This includes assessing the quality of loans existing in Branch portfolios, assessing the consistency of lending practice and documentation with related bank policy, and providing current information regarding portfolio risk. In this role, you will also be required to identify problem credits and make recommendations for enhancements/improvements to the Bank’s policies, guidelines and procedures based on actual practices.

What you will achieve in this role:

  • Onsite Branch Reviews and Reporting: Perform scheduled loan review portfolio examinations and produce Loan Review Reports on individual credit exposures, including assessing the quality of Commercial and Retail loan quality on an individual credit and portfolio basis; evaluate the quality of underwriting of Loan Applications to ensure compliance with Loan Policies and Guidelines; advise Branch Management, Credit Department and Internal Audit of findings and recommendations, including designing an appropriate sampling methodology
  • Prepare the Bank Wide Loan Review Report and Branch Loan Review Reports (on a semi-annual basis) and report to the Loan Review Committee and Risk Management Committee on a quarterly basis
  • Perform any ad hoc or targeted portfolio examinations or reviews
  • Complete monthly desktop reviews of recent credit approved transactions to confirm assigned risk ratings and compliance with the Bank’s credit policies, guidelines and procedures
  • Identify problem loans and refer them to the Credit Department for additional scrutiny
  • Identify exceptions to the Bank’s Loan Policies, Guidelines & Procedures and banking laws and regulations and monitor corrective actions taken by the Branch/Credit Department
  • Implement and maintain the Loan Review Procedures document
  • Provide all reports related to loan review including significant findings and related recommendations, assessing the effectiveness of risk ratings, adherence to underwriting and credit policy standards, and monitoring
  • Assess the adequacy of the Bank’s individual allowances for credit losses
  • Coordinate Loan Review Committee meetings: Design and implement an appropriate methodology for measuring branch performance semi-annually as part of Branch scorecard
  • Act as Administrator of the Loan Review System (KIBS): Manage, plan, and oversee work completed by the Loan Review Officer for the Western Branches
  • Maintain current and strong industry knowledge of assigned areas, including applicable OSFI guidelines and requirements
  • Establish and maintain positive and constructive working relationships within other departments, Loan Officers, OSFI and internal and external auditors

What you will bring to this role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Finance or related field is required
  • 5+ years of direct experience in a credit risk management position within a federally regulated financial institution
  • Financial Risk Management (FRM) designation is strongly preferred
  • Strong experience assessing the quality of underwriting practices for residential and commercial mortgages as well as other retail and commercial loans
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian regulatory requirements for federally regulated financial institutions
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite products
  • Strong conceptual thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work co-operatively and collaboratively with others to accomplish individual, team and organizational objectives
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to effectively synthesize and convey information in both written and verbal forms (including presenting complex material to others/management in a clear and concise manner)
  • Ability to adapt within a changing environment
  • Ability to communicate in Korean is a strong asset
