Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Substation Engineer to provide technical leadership across high-voltage substation and balance-of-plant projects. This position will guide engineering activities from early project development and proposal support through detailed design, construction, and project closeout.

The engineer will serve as a key technical interface between project teams, customers, vendors, and engineering disciplines while ensuring designs meet technical, schedule, safety, and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering activities for HV substation and balance-of-plant projects from concept through construction.
• Develop and review substation design packages, including:
  • Single-line diagrams
  • General arrangements, plans, and elevations
  • HV bus and equipment layouts
  • Grounding and lightning protection
  • Cable, conduit, wiring, and auxiliary power systems
  • Control and GIS building arrangements
• Develop equipment specifications and technical data sheets for transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, reactors, capacitors, and other HV/MV equipment.
• Coordinate engineering schedules, design reviews, technical risks, quality requirements, and design changes.
• Perform or oversee engineering calculations, equipment sizing, material takeoffs, and bills of material.
• Work with suppliers and procurement teams to evaluate technical proposals and equipment selections.
• Coordinate with electrical, civil, structural, controls, CAD, project management, and construction teams.
• Act as a primary technical contact for project-related engineering matters.
• Support construction by responding to RFIs, resolving field issues, and completing design compliance inspections.
• Provide engineering input for proposals, project estimates, equipment applications, and execution planning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• 5+ years of experience designing transmission or distribution substations, preferably including utility, renewable energy, or other large infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience with HV substation physical design and associated engineering studies.
• Strong understanding of HV/MV equipment application, selection, layout, and integration.
• Knowledge of North American electrical standards and codes, including applicable IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC requirements.
• Experience developing engineering solutions where project specifications may be incomplete or evolving.
• Working knowledge of grounding, lightning protection, station service, DC systems, cable sizing, bus design, insulation coordination, and equipment selection.
• Familiarity with EPC or engineered-equipment project execution environments.

Preferred Background

• Professional Engineer (PE)
• Experience reviewing and sealing engineering deliverables where applicable.
• Understanding of civil and structural considerations associated with substation design.
• Previous field, commissioning, testing, or troubleshooting experience.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, or similar engineering design platforms.
• Strong project coordination, technical communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage several engineering priorities while maintaining schedule and design quality.
