Lead Software Engineer (VOIP/Telephony)

Overview

A confidential, mission-driven technology company and client of Peskind Executive Search is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to help design, build, and scale modern software platforms supporting public safety and emergency response organizations across the United States.

This organization delivers responsible, data-driven and AI-enabled solutions to 911 Emergency Communications Centers, law enforcement agencies, and fire/EMS departments. Their platforms support training, quality assurance, performance evaluation, staffing optimization, and operational excellence—directly impacting first responders and the communities they serve.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced engineer who enjoys architecting systems, writing production code, and mentoring teams in a fast-moving, mission-critical environment.

Note: This position is open exclusively to U.S. Citizens due to the sensitive nature of the data and regulatory compliance requirements.


Role & Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Team Enablement

  • Lead and support a distributed engineering team through all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)

  • Facilitate agile ceremonies including standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives

  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and peer code reviews

  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance coaching of engineering team members

Software Architecture & Design

  • Own and drive software design and system architecture for assigned initiatives

  • Produce clear architectural diagrams, documentation, and implementation plans

  • Ensure adherence to internal quality, security, and architectural standards

  • Apply best practices for both SaaS and on-premise software delivery models

Software Development

  • Contribute hands-on development across the full technology stack (frontend, backend, and database)

  • Develop and maintain high-quality, scalable, and secure code

  • Write and maintain automated tests including unit, integration, and functional tests (e.g., Selenium, Playwright)

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with product, engineering, and customer-facing teams

  • Support technical problem-solving related to customer implementations and production systems


Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer in SaaS or technology-driven environments

  • 2+ years of experience leading or mentoring software development teams

  • Strong expertise in .NET and/or Java (Spring Boot experience strongly preferred)

  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React or Angular

  • Experience designing, building, and documenting public and private APIs

  • Experience with AWS and Infrastructure as Code

  • Strong experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)

  • Familiarity with alternative datastores (OpenSearch, Redshift, etc.) is a plus

  • Solid understanding of modern web architectures and distributed systems

  • Experience with VoIP / Telephony technologies including SIP, SDP, SIPREC, RTP

  • Experience handling and manipulating audio streams and codecs

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to operate independently in a remote environment

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in CJIS-compliant environments

  • Background in public safety, emergency communications, or adjacent industries

  • Familiarity with AI-enabled platforms and related security considerations
