Laboratory Director – Technical Services

Sequence has been exclusively retained and is currently seeking a Laboratory Director to be responsible for bringing a technology perspective to strategic planning and oversight of effective technology implementation/resources.

This unique role is slated to direct both technical affairs and be the organization's key interface with customers, vendors, and technical and management team members.

It is currently the most high-profile opportunity of its kind in the niche water and environmental testing industry, with opportunities for career advancement and stock ownership.

Our client, one of California's oldest and most respected analytical testing laboratories, is significantly expanding its operations, with a core focus on water (drinking water, stormwater, wastewater) and environmental (hazardous waste and soil).

With specific relation to the operations activities, the firm has tasked us with finding a key Technical Laboratory Director for technical operations responsible for all technology and laboratory leadership and administration.

Key duties and responsibilities would generally include:

Technical Leadership

  • Creating and monitoring successful technology implementations.
  • Aligning technology goals to departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Staying current on emerging technologies, instrumentation, and pending regulatory changes impacting the testing industry.
  • Evaluating new equipment and efficiency gains of new method development.
  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the internal IT function.

Laboratory Operations

  • Growing the organization's lab service offerings to meet organizational strategic objectives.
  • Working with all laboratories' operations to continuously improve lab technical capabilities and services.
  • Developing and validating methods, work instructions, and training for all laboratories.
  • Ensure laboratory operations meet the technical quality objectives required by various accrediting bodies.
  • Maintaining knowledge and familiarity with existing environmental methods, techniques, and regulations covering the existing fields of testing and services.
  • Working closely with Lab Operations regarding instrumentation and technical matters.
  • Ensuring that the quality assurance and quality control programs are properly implemented, maintained, and meet the requirements of all accrediting bodies.
  • Serving as the final decision maker on reporting, communication, and documentation of lab data.
  • Overseeing the day-to-day training, implementation, and administration of the Element LIMS.

Organizational Leadership

  • Participating in executive planning and strategy formation: providing advice and technical perspective.
  • Providing support and technical direction to Technical Managers, Lab Managers, Executive Team, and Operations.
  • Aligning the company's technology resources with short and long-term goals.
  • Leading and managing laboratory technical managers.
  • Assisting staff with method and instrument implementation.
  • Assisting in communicating and implementing the strategic plan, including promoting positive company culture and direction.
  • Participating with environmental associations and other regulatory networking groups, such as ACIL's ESS, ELTAC, etc., to stay informed and keep laboratories in the forefront of the regulatory and trade association technical groups.

Through the organization would ideally like an individual with a water and environmental testing background, they would be open to a wide variety of skill sets that could make the transition over to their domain of practice.

The role requires:

  • Bachelor of Science or advanced degrees in microbiology, chemical, environmental, biological sciences, physical sciences, or engineering, with at least 24 college semester credit hours in chemistry.
  • Minimum 3-5 years in the environmental analysis of inorganic and organic analytes.
  • Knowledge of current methodologies and interpretation of analytical methods.
  • Knowledge of lab operations, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong operational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong process improvement and streamlining abilities
