Job Overview:
Our client, a renowned architectural firm specializing in advanced research and technology facilities, is seeking a dedicated Lab Planner with extensive experience in designing and planning laboratory environments. The ideal candidate will lead the spatial planning, programming, and coordination of life science and tech labs, including vivariums, cleanrooms, and R&D spaces, ensuring optimal functionality, safety, and compliance with industry standards. This role requires a strategic thinker with a passion for integrating cutting-edge design with operational efficiency to support innovative scientific research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed lab space programs and layouts for life science and technology projects, including vivariums, BSL-3/BSL-4 labs, and cleanrooms, from conceptual planning through design development (DD).
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and research clients to integrate specialized lab systems (e.g., HVAC, fume hoods, containment) and ensure alignment with scientific workflows and safety protocols.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and space utilization analyses to optimize lab designs for functionality, scalability, and compliance with standards such as NIH, ASHRAE, and local building codes.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors and facility managers to plan for lab infrastructure, including casework, utilities, and IT integration, supporting projects ranging from $10M to $100M+.
  • Prepare and review lab-specific documentation, including equipment schedules, adjacency diagrams, and permitting packages, while providing input during construction administration to maintain design intent.
  • Facilitate client workshops and presentations to gather requirements and present lab planning solutions, ensuring stakeholder buy-in and regulatory approval.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field; coursework or certification in lab planning or healthcare design is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of lab planning experience, with at least 4 years focused on life science, biotech, or technology lab projects (e.g., vivariums, cleanrooms, R&D facilities).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, BIM 360, and visualization tools (e.g., Enscape, Lumion); experience with lab planning software is a plus.
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth understanding of lab design requirements, including ventilation systems, containment protocols, and equipment integration for research environments.
  • Coordination Skills: Strong ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers and scientists, to deliver tailored lab solutions under tight deadlines.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience presenting to research clients and navigating regulatory processes.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with phased lab renovations in active research settings.
  • Knowledge of LEED or sustainable lab design principles.
  • Certification in lab planning (e.g., I2SL accreditation) or project management (e.g., PMP) is highly desirable.
